Reflections for Special Agent Samuel Steele Hicks

I have been trying to leave a message on this board since the week that Sam died, but I can never seem to find the right words. It's been 4 months and the 'right' words still cannot be found. I hope that Sam's family and friends are coping as well as possible given the circumstances. I know it had been several years since I had seen Sam on a regular basis, but childhood memories of pool parties and playing outside will live on forever. I still think about Sam often and I know that my family feels the same way.

God bless you and all who mourn you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Your daddy is a hero. I know that you will not be able to read this now, but some day, when you are older, I hope you find this and know that your daddy is greatly appreciated. God bless you.

Everyday I think about you and wish you were still here with us. I know how much you loved Brooke and Noah, please know that they are being taken care of. I have not been able to figure out why God took you from us, but I do know He must have had a reason. You were an amazing person, agent, friend, husband and most of all father. Our lives and our world will never be the same with out you. You are missed and loved.

Brooke-

This message is for you. I did not know Sam but I am sure he was an outstanding father and husband to you and Noah.

Take comfort in knowing that is in a good place where he will always be watching over you both. He paid the ultimate price through a selfless act.

I wish you and Noah nothing but peace in the future.

Take Care,
Kasey

From the time this story first hit breaking news early in the morning, my heart hurt. Officer down and my husband is a PA State Trooper not far from that area. I prayed for the officer and his family. Only to find out a couple hours later, that it was Sam and I knew him from college at UPJ.

Every day I thank God for people so willing to put others first and have such a good heart. People who have a great passion to make a difference in this world...no matter the risks. It is because of Sam and people like him that the rest of us can enjoy life. His heroism will never be forgotten. It takes a very special person to be in law enforcement. Someone who will stand up for what is right and protect us. They lay their lives on the line every day. And every day neither the officer, nor the family at home, knows what lies ahead. But they believe in what they are doing and will face fear in the eyes so you don't have to.

I feel so much saddness for his wife, son, family and friends. Cherish the memories you have with Sam as he has touched each of your lives in a different way. He was put on this earth to do good...and he did. Thank you for your bravery Sam.

I became acquainted with some members of your Pittsburgh Division squad almost two year before you joined it, when I popped up on their investigative radar. At first, I was, of course, afraid. However, with cooperation and honesty and work among us all (me, your future squadmates, other LEO's), we successfully resolved the question at hand. I was very much impressed by how your future squadmates did their job competently, carefully, and honestly - most especially B, the one with whom I had the most contact. I also met a brand new SA, whose first name starts with T, when he accompanied B during one day. I recall thinking how lucky T is to get this squad/team as his first SA assignment, and perhaps even to have B as his Training Agent.

Sam, I never interacted with you in your role as an SA, but I have seen you a few times in your role as a fellow customer in a shop not far from Pgh Div. I even, for a moment, wondered if "that guy over there" is an SA with Pgh Div. Had I known for sure, and had I known that you were a new SA with my "favorite squad" in the whole Bureau, I would have gone up to you and told you how lucky you are to have these men and women as your first post-Quantico squadmates. Of course, you would not have needed me to tell you so, because you got plenty of proof of that every day that you worked with them.

Brooke and Noah, it might be impossible right now for either of you to think that your husband and father was "lucky" to get Pgh Div as his first assignment, after all he got KLD'd here. What happened here, though, could have happened in any Div of the Bureau, and it could have happened had he remained a Baltimore police officer. I hope that in years to come, you will cherish the fond, the glorious, the kind and the sweet memories of the months that you lived in the greater Pittsburgh area. You and Sam will be always in my prayers.

Sam,

It was a pleasure and an honor to know you and to be one of your classmates in NAC 07-05. I remember how quiet you were in class but outside of class, that was a totally different matter. I recall your stories about your time on the Baltimore PD especially during your rookie year. How you used to make us all laugh!!!! Sam, you will be sorely missed by SOOOO many.... this was evident by everyone who gathered to wish you farewell at your funeral.

Brooke & Noah - Thank you for sharing Sam with us!!! Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God give you continued strength. May you have some peace in knowing that,"Sam will never be forgotten by those whose lives he touched and we will continue to honor him by fighting the good fight!!!!"

Rest in Peace, Sam... until we meet again!!!!
