Special Agent Samuel Hicks,

The circumstances of your death are among the most horrendous on record. A law officer performing his duty and is gunned-down in the process. It is an age-old situation and yet it still persists. No amount of training, skill or readiness can prevent the actions of an individual who is bent on killing a law officer. As law officers it is our duty to present ourselves as the fist-line soldier and that means making ourselves a target. We have little choice and we know the risk, but we do it anyway. Those of us that have served in this capacity and survived are merely lucky. We cannot claim any special knowledge or advantage over those who have died. We can only cringe and recoil from the pain both for those who make this sacrifice and those who care about them. For when one of us dies we have a part of us die also. We have survived such similar instances only but for the grace of God. For the immediate family of Agent Hicks we pray that they are given the strength and courage to go on living. Their grief is felt by all of us. May they be comforted knowing that a husband, a father, a son, a brother is also a hero among heros. To him we render a final salute.

A Part Of America Died,

Somebody killed a policeman today,
And part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
And spend many long lonely nights.
The beat he walked was a battle field too
just as if he had gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
In your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And stands at each new rookies' side.
He answered the call,of himself and gave his all,
And a part of America died.
Why is it in this time that a person's life means nothing to another human being? It really upsets me to know that a person can kill some one without a value to the other person's life.
We hope that these few words will help in the dark days ahead and those that knew and loved Special Agent Hicks.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

My son was 37 and left a wife, 3 yr old girl and 5 yr. old boy. This has been a rough year.
You have to take this hour by hour to get over this first week. We still have bad times especially with the holidays coming.
Pray, grieve and cry. It is the only thing that will make you feel alive. You will make it even if you don't think that possible now.
Open your heart to all who will let you grieve with them.
And most of all - put yourself in Gods Arms.

"My Brother"

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.

Rest easy Brother Hicks, we have the watch...

”I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.”
