POLICE OFFICER
9TH DISTRICT

November 14, 2008

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Larry,

There is something to be said for the fact we've lost an officer every year since 2005.. I really thought after Vu, I was pretty well jaded. I've honestly been to enough funerals for partners and heard of enough that I'd resigned my heart to just dealing with the painful realization that after a long tenure of no line of duty deaths, our agency is catching up in spades. It is a twisted testament to the man you were, the guy I considered a friend, that I had steeled myself to the immense pain of losing another brother officer on the Sacramento Sheriff's Department and planned to "deal with it." Yet, there I was with my wife, kids, and good friends when I heard Larry Canfield died in the line of duty. My eyes watered up, and I couldn't answer when my wife asked if I knew you. Thoughts instantly came to mind of you, always with a cigar butt clenched in your teeth, but more importantly, with a smile behind it. I can't say our kids played together, and wives knew each other etc. But, you were someone who, I knew when I was at Rockingham, if I was hoping to run into. You were always a genuine man, and good person. I'm so sorry to think I'll never hear 5-Mary-5 on the air again, with that same lifted voice, that conveyed the solid, happy man you were. Rest in peace brother, you earned the "early in."

I had the honor of meeting Deputy Canfield at the 2007 Law Ride during National Police Week in Washington D.C. As fellow motor deputies, we spoke at length about similarities and differences between law enforcement agencies in California and Florida. I took a photo of Deputy Canfield's motor and we traded agency patches. Deputy Canfield was extremely professional and easy to talk to. We shook hands and parted ways, wishing each other a safe journey. In 2007, I was involved in an on-duty crash on my motor that I spent several months recovering from. I attended National Police Week 2008 (without a motor) and again saw Deputy Canfield in D.C. as another fallen Sacramento County Deputy Sheriff was being honored at Kelly's Irish Times.

The news of Deputy Canfield's passing saddens me deeply even after just two chance encounters. I am reminded of how small the world really is, and that we're all brothers and sisters in this job. My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Canfield's wife, children, and law enforcment family.
