As I sit here, tears streaming down my face, I am heartbroken, frustrated, horrified and angry beyond belief. As a young patrolman assigned to my department’s Mobile Reserve Unit, I once lived in the very building Sgt. King was murdered in front of. I often stopped and chatted with him as he made his rounds, and always looked forward to his company and his advice. Mike was just that kind of guy – even though I never had the privilege of working with or for him, he was always glad to share his experience and wisdom with a younger officer who was still learning how to do the job he loved so much, and I was always flattered that he would take the time.

Inscribed on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is the saying “It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.” Sgt. King embodied this saying every day, and I am a better man and a better officer for having known him. Although it seems too little, too late, I hope his loved ones know that his example and his work will be carried on by the many officers he mentored. He will never be forgotten, and we will not rest until his killer is brought to justice.

Det. Sgt. Dave Joyce
Jennings Police Department
