I only recently learned that my great grandfather James Holland Howard also died in a similar vain as my Grandfather Clarence Howard (his son)...it explains the pride and sadness my father experienced for the majority of his life. (He-age 3 and my aunt-age 1 were both placed in an orphanage for a good portion of their childhood after the death of their father). I suppose that was a common practice in the day.

None-the-less, a great toll on our family for many generations...my Dad went on to become a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. He often reflected on the rich heritage of his family, Dark Corner and his given name...also James Howard.

Thanks to those responsible for this memorial/reminder of the brave individuals who pay the biggest price.

I just recently learned that my great grandfather, James Holland Howard died in the line of duty. As I had only been told of his son, my grandfather, Clarence Howard dying in a similar vain. As I child I must have confused the two, as one in the same. Besides, how does this type of sad history repeat itself in one family???
It certainly explains the mix of pride and sadness my own father (who- along with his sister, was placed in an orphanage for a time after the death of his father) experienced for much of his life.
To the responsible individuals, I thank you for this clarity and memorial.

This man, Holland Howard was my great granddaddy. Of course, I never was honored enough to meet him or Uncle Clarence. I was just tickled to see this pop up when I googled his name.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 87th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
