Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Patrick C. McDonald

Judgment Day for a Policeman

The policeman stood and faced his God
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shiny,
Just as brightly as his brass.

“Step forward now, Policeman
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?”

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
“No, Lord, I guess I ain’t,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can’t always be a saint.

I’ve had to work most Sunday’s
And at times my work was rough,
And sometimes I’ve been violent
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny
That wasn’t mine to keep,
I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I’ve wept unmanly tears.

I know I don’t deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you’ve a place for me here, Lord
It needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.”

There was silence all around the Throne
Where the Saints had often trod,
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

“Step forward now, policeman,
You’ve borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets,

I don't know exactly what to write, but there are tears in my eyes as I think of a man who I never met. It hurts to think of the great loss you represent and my heart goes out to your friends, co-workers, and family.

Often I worry about my brother. He is also my best friend. I know the selflessness that comes with giving your life to this profession and it upsets me greatly that so often people don't understand or stop to consider what it means to be an officer.

Thank you, Officer McDonald. Sadly, you really had to give your life. If your friends and family are reading this I hope they know that my heart goes out to them. Truly, deeply. I'm sorry, so sorry, for your loss. When you love an officer your heart becomes vulnerable to chance and circumstance.

This was hideous.

I can only imagine your pain.

Officer McDonald obviously lived for what being a part of the PD means and did everything he could.

My heart, thoughts, and condolences go out to everyone who knew this man.

Rest in pride for a city you lived to protect.

My daughter received a text from a friend and told me that another police officer was killed. I asked the name b/c much like most Northeast philly residents I have a lot of friends neighbors, and family members who are in the dept. Afterwards I went into the shower and sobbed. How could this be?????

Thank you to you PO McDonald. Thank you PPD!
To the citizens wake up!!!Protecting the scum in your neighborhood will not make your neighborhood any safer it will just help them continue..
