Scotty, You have shown what true dedication and commitment to policing is all about. You, my friend, have made the ultimate sacrifice. I cant put into words the emotions that have come over us at the PD. We are so sad and our hearts are broken. I will always remember the good times we had working together in the crime scene unit. We had many laughs together. You never once complained about anything and smiled every chance you got. I will miss so many things about you but most of all your true kindness. Scotty, Thank you for being such a good friend. You were an amazing father and husband to Donna. We love you and will miss you forever.

"FINAL INSPECTION"

The policeman stood and faced his God, which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining. Just as bright as his brass. "Step forward now, Sgt. Aponte. How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek?

To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No Lord, I guess I ain't, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent, because the streets are awfully tough.

I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...

Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.

And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.

They never wanted me around except to calm their fear. if you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod.

As the policeman waited quitely, for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman, You've borne your burdens well.

Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets, You've done you time in hell.

My prayers are with you, your wife and your children during this difficult time. As you know, our family experienced a similar tragedy when Dan was struck by a vehicle almost two years ago. If I know Dan, he was the first one there to greet you and guide you. That is just his way.

May you find peace, Sergeant Aponte.

Scott, it was truly a privilege to serve beside you, and I am thankful for that time. As a member of the Honor Guard, you have honored many fallen officers with dignity and distinction. Sadly my friend, we must now perform our solemn duties to show you the honor you so richly deserve. God bless you.
