The first time I met AJ Stocks, we both were waiting for our pre-employment review board. I was nervous, but AJ looked cool. He told me not to worry, that I would do fine, and he gave me some tips on how to answer the questions. I went before he did and when I came out, he was standing there with a smile and gave me a thumbs up. I saw AJ later in the week at the psych testing and we both knew we would be starting Patrol School together. Those 29 weeks were the hardest weeks of my life. I was in a room by myself and the instructors had tore my room up oneday. AJ was one of the guys that ran in to help me make the beds. I told him in a panic that we would never get everything cleaned up in time. He said, "if we work together we can get it done... I'll help you". AJ always had his stuff together. He was older than alot of us, but he PT'd just as hard and worked just as hard. I remember how serious he always was and how we would joke with him about it. We didn't get to socialize that much in Patrol School, but AJ would always say something motivational to get everyone going. The second to the last night of Patrol School, he was waxing his room floor...he wanted it to be perfect.

AJ was a good trooper and he worked hard. I know he loved his job. I know he was happy to get Wake County out of Patrol School so he could work where he grew up.

I am so sorry AJ. I wish I could have seen you before your accident. God Bless your family and friends. God needed you more than we did. I'll always remember that day we first met and you encouraged me with a smile. Keep smiling from Heaven.

Trooper Andrew Stocks,

Our duty requires that we be present among the public and in traffic as we provide service and protection. During this time we are on a major battlefield... a United States highway. To have died performing our duty and in service to others is to have made the sacrifice of a hero. Regardless of our training, skills and no matter how much caution we might use the risk is ever present. Each of us that has performed this duty, and those who still do, render a final salute to you...a brother, and a fellow soldier of the law. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.

Trooper A.J. Stocks and I worked the same area. Although with different agencies he along with Troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol has always worked side by side together. Trooper Stocks was a great Trooper and dedicated to serving the citizens here in Wake County. The lost is tragic and difficult. We will carry on but Trooper Stocks memory will carry on with us. Thanks for your dedication and service. To your family, friends and other fellow Troopers you’re in my thoughts and prayers. May God Bless everyone and comfort them in this time of need.

I keep thinking about the conversation I had with you today before the crash, just 30 minutes prior!. The last thing you said was that "I'll see you on Thursday, buddy!!". To sit here knowing that I won't get to see you on that day, well it makes me sad to say the least.

You were a good trooper. You loved your job. I remember when you could come check on me while I was on a stop. We would sit for 10-15 minutes afterward and just shoot the breeze. I always enjoyed that, and always appreciated you checking on me. That's the way things are supposed to be. We help each other. We are a family. Thank you for doing your job and doing it well. Thank you for being the kind of Trooper that would make a difference. And thank you for always checking to see if I was safe.

Rest Easy friend, we have the watch now.
