Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Lieutenant Robert James Curry

Rest in peace motorman.

Ofc. Michael Walker
Tallahassee Police Department

August 15, 2008

I am honored to add my words of tribute to this memorial for Lt. Curry, but sad that it is upon the occasion of his death. Though I didn't know him, there is no doubt in my mind that he served honorably and unselfishly. May God comfort his wife and children and the Gulfport PD. Know that your neighbors across the state line are holding you close in prayer.

Rob was a great officer, friend, and father. He always knew how to cheer anyone up when they were down. He will always hold a special place our hearts. I will always love him and his family.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Lieutenant Curry and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Lieutenant Curry, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Lieutenant Curry is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family, and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

For those who pledge to uphold it, Freedom requires a sacrifice the protected will never know.

I worked with Lt. Curry since our very beginnings in this career. He was a remarkable DUI Officer and a friend. This community has lost a icon as for the Gulfport Police Department. As a follow STORM member I can say all our hearts are broken. Pray for Lt. Leslie Curry is wife and there two children Kristin and Trevor as they go through this time of sorrow. And remember even though Lt. Curry is not on this earth, we all have gained an angel.
Rest in Peace Rob! And God Bless you and your dear family!

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
for the judgment of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
you’ve born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
you’ve done your time in hell"

To Lt. Robert Curry's family, friends and co-workers, I know how you feel. I too lost a very close friend of mine on July 7th, 2007 (Wes Hardy). I will keep everyone in my prayers. May god be with all of you!!!

We have lost a brother in blue but now he will be our angel in blue. I have had the pleasure of working with Rob for the past 14 years. He was a dedicated, hard working officer. He will be sadly missed. When someone was down and out Rob was always there to help pep them up. We will miss his dearly.

Bob was the reason I went to school for criminal justice and he is the reason I'm going to be a cop. He always used to ask me when i was going to come down to be a police officer with him. You are my hero! May they welcome you with opens arms up there because you would have done just that for anyone. I miss you!
