Reflections for Detective Michael Smith Phillips

I just heard about the officer hurt by a drunk driver.
I know you were watching over him.

Uncle Mike,

I thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday, the days before that too.
we think of you in silence.
we often speak your name.
now all we have is memories.
and your picture in a frame.
your memory is our keepsake.
with which we'll never part.
God has you in his keeping
we have you in our hearts.

I looked up in the sky the other day and i noticed how beautiful it was. then i realized it's beatiful because your up there.

Thinking of you,

Thinking of you today as I do oh so often, Mike. Thank you for watching over my other half on Tuesday. I know you were there with him and words can't express how grateful I am that you and the Archangel protected him. I hope you are enjoying the view from above and thank you for watching over all of us on the beat.

There isn't a day that I wake up that I don't think of you. Sometimes to remember how you tormented me when we were kids and others to reflect on the old man you won't become. The other day I was feeling particularly low, and it was hard to face the rest of the day. I dozed off and in the dream I saw you looking at me from the other side of a wall. I wasn't sure what to make of the image in my dream, but when I woke up, I felt a sense of warmth and an overwhelming feeling of healing. I know you were there and giving me strength to go forward. Thanks for keeping watch. We may not have always gotten along, as most sisters and brothers don't, but I always knew you had my back. Thanks for helping me keep the faith.

Mike, I only met you briefly but right away I knew you were a proud father, a dedicated husband and a honorable police officer. It was my true pleasure helping you out. I pray for your family to be safe.

Mikey:

Saw the news yesterday. The two that took you away from us were indicted on capital murder charges. We are ways away from the trial but its a step forward. When we heard it, we were grateful that the process of ruining their lives has begun as they deserve. But it also opened healing wounds; wounds that will never heal completely. We all carry you in our hearts and minds and I know you are watching over Jamie and all of our friends. I tell Jamie we need to go to your gravesite and he says nothing, but his face says it all. It is still so hard for him to talk about you. He says he misses you though and you were such a good friend to him. Just wanted you to know we still think of you all the time as well as your family. Im sure the holidays were so hard for them. Went by your memorial the other day, there are still people and officers who stop by there, as there were the day i was there. Well, keep watch over us please and we will see you again one day. Rest in peace brother...God Bless You

Mike:
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Christmas just wasn't the same this year but the boys did real well. Terri got lots of support from your Department and a lot of others. Your Unit is the best!!! We all miss you so much and think about you every day. I always signed off when talking to you by saying "Stay safe" -- and now I know you are. We love you.

It has taken me so long to even get the nerve up to do this. I guess I am still waiting for someone to tell me that he is okay or waiting for my cell phone to ring and hearing his voice call me "Spankie". I know that he is now alright in Heaven watching over all his brothers & sisters in blue. What can I say? Mike was not only my partner on the job but a great friend. We shared our families whether it was quick in and out Thanksgiving Dinner while on shift, Christmas Eve building his kids toys, or weekends at the lake drinking beer and having fun. Our friendships were and still are very strong. I was able to be in the delivery room for his youngest son, birth. A very private moment in a couple's lives and he & his wife wanted me there. It is not fair that a good person's life was taken at such an early age. I do believe that it does take a certain type of person to do the job we chose and Mike you died with dignity and pride doing what you loved best. I am going to miss you "Skippy" but I will never forget you. Some day we will meet up again.

I never knew you personally but we did have a friend in common, your FTO at Hampton PD Greg Williams. The one thing he told me about you that has stuck in my mind is that you were one of those guys who just did everything right as a Police Officer. Though I never knew you I like to think that in some small measure I carry on a little bit of your ethic every day or night I hit the street. When I'm faced with any situation now I think in the back of my mind "what would Mike Phillips do, that HERO that Greg said did everything right as a cop?". My heart goes out to your family and I hope they can rest a little bit easier knowing that there are officers out there carrying on your legacy and trying to "just right" like you were.
