Although I never met you, I wanted to let your family know that I am so sorry you lost your loved one in the war on drugs! He was fighting a great battle and I am deeply saddened that his life was taken. I teach the D.A.R.E. Program to elementary students. On the day of your funeral the lesson they learned was about Marijuana. I had to tell those kids how you lost your life over that particular drug because you were trying to protect them from people like the ones that took your life. I want these children to realize that these drugs do powerful things that have consequences on not only the person using the drug (or selling it) but innocent people everywhere.

Thanks for your efforts! You and your family are in my thoughts.

Dear Mike:

Its been a week since you passed. I am surrounded by the people who loved you the most and knew you the best. I have heard so many wonderful stories of you, one of which made me laugh so hard, i couldnt stop laughing. I've heard stories of how you were a dedicated father and husband, a loving and dependable friend and a police officer that was loyal to his job of protecting our streets and your fellow officers. Your funeral was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, to see your family and brothers and sisters in so much pain was heartbreaking. I have thought about your wife and sons everyday and I absolutely cannot imagine the hell they are going through. But dont you worry, we will take care of them! Your memory will live on in each of us that knew you and loved you. It is hard for me to find the words to describe the way that i have felt since your death, yet I find myself compelled to write. Watching the people that I love that have lost a wonderful friend is one of the hardest things I think I will see in my entire life. I hope that they can find peace in the many happy and funny memories they have of the times you all spent together. And I hope that you are there to witness the day when your killer must stand before God and be condemned to hell for all eternity. I know that you and Rod and all of our fallen heroes will rest peacefully. Please watch over my husband and all of your fellow officers and keep them safe, bringing them home to their families after every shift. We shall never forget you and I am honored to have known you. We will see you in heaven...

Mike,
just the other day I stood at your funeral, my heart breaking for your wife and sons and for the rest of us that loved you. As I looked out over the sea of your brothers and sisters I said to them that you would forever be an unseen angel by their side. I spoke with absolute faith and conviction in that belief. Just last night in your old stomping grounds in Hampton, an officer was shot and LIVED in the line of duty. Thank you "Skippy" I knew that though you may be "OFF DUTY" here on earth, up there in heaven you are still on the job.

Mike,
you were taken from us without warning or reason. Those of us you leave behind will never forget you. We will care for your family as you would have. I believe that as long as we have faith, though we miss you and mourn your loss, all we have to do is close our eyes and it will never really be goodbye. Our love for you goes on and on. You will live forever in our hearts.

IT’S NEVER REALLY GOODBYE

THE SILENCE IS SHATTERED BY THE SOUND OF BREAKING HEARTS
IN THOSE OF US WHO CALLED MICHAEL HUSBAND, FATHER, SON AND FRIEND
BUT I BELIEVE THAT EVEN THOUGH HE’S WRAPPED IN THE LOVING ARMS OF GOD
HE WILL LOAN HIM BACK TO US EVERY NOW AND THEN

HE WILL BE THERE IN THE WHISPER OF A GENTLE BREEZE
WHEN YOU NEED COMFORT TO EASE YOUR PAIN
HE WILL BE THERE TO TAKE AWAY THE DARKNESS
HE’S THE RAY OF SUNSHINE JUST AFTER THE RAIN

HE WILL BE THERE FOR YOU TERRI IN THE MIDST OF THE NIGHT
WHEN YOU THINK YOU ARE ALL ALONE
HIS ARMS WILL SILENTLY BE WRAPPED AROUND YOU
TO GIVE YOU STRENGTH WHEN YOU THINK THERE IS NONE

HE IS THE STILLNESS IN GOD’S GREAT FOREST
WHERE HE HUNTED WITH HIS FATHER AND SONS
HE IS THERE IN THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE MOON
TO HELP YOU BE AT REST WHEN THE DAY IS DONE

HE IS THE LAUGHTER IN HIS MOTHER’S MEMORIES
HE IS THE GENTLE HAND THAT DRYS HER TEARS
HE IS THERE IN EVERY PRAYER YOU SAY
HE IS THERE TO HELP YOU FIGHT YOUR FEARS

HE IS THERE WITH HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN BLUE
HE IS THAT UNSEEN ANGEL BY YOUR SIDE EVERYDAY
HE IS THAT ECHO, THAT LITTLE VOICE IN YOUR HEAD
THAT WILL TURN YOU SUDDENLY A DIFFERENT WAY

HE WILL BE THE GUIDING FORCE IN HIS SONS LIVES
AS THEY GROW UP THINKING THIS IS WHAT DADDY WOULD DO
AND FOR THE LOVING WIFE HE’LL NEVER REALLY LEAVE BEHIND
HIS PRESENCE, HIS SPIRIT AND LOVE WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU

I only met Mike once through Eric and Kathy. He was an awfully nice guy. Eric always spoke highly of him. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family during this difficult time. I know there is nothing anyone can say or do to make the pain/loss easier. Just always cherish the memories you have and forever keep them alive through the spirit of his boys.

Mike,
Although I haven't been with the VBPD family to long, I was fortunate enough to cross your path and meet you. We worked a few cases together and had a lot of fun. I was only a week before your untimely death that we got to take that sweet Charger for a ride. You deserve that car and I know you are riding around the streets of heaven in it watching over us drinking a little bottle of Dr. Pepper. Take care my brother. I wish I would have had more time to get to know you better. May God bless you and your family in their time of need. They will never be alone and you will never be forgotten!
