From the time we were in 9th grade you knew you wanted to be a LEO - and measured every decision with that goal in mind. My heart soared when you told me you finished the academy. It soared again when you told me of your new life, love, family and wife.

I can hardly believe you're gone, but know all too well that the very best get taken away far too soon. Thank you for being the friend you were, and for always finding a way to make me laugh, even if it was just over the brake indicator light in your ugly yellow/orange Datsun in 10th grade.

The fact that you gave your life in the service of others is no surprise to me - but it's a loss your friends, family, and community will feel indefinitely.

Godspeed my friend.

To the Compton family, please accept my deepest condolences during this tragic time. Deputy Compton, you made the greatest sacrific that could be asked of any law enforcement officer. You did so while protecting the citizens, both good and bad, of this great community. GOD decided that he needed another good officer to work a beat in heaven and he chose you. I never had the opportunity to meet you, however I do know several officers at your agency. From what I have heard and read, you were a great officer. We will never forget you brother.

I went to High School with Dennis in Virginia. I can't believe this happened to him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow officers. I can only imagine the deep hurt and pain they are feeling right now. It is such a shame this happened to him. I just can't believe it.

I am truly sorry for the loss of a great officer. I can relate to what everyone is feeling as a few hours ago the same thing happened here and it finally hit me like a brick. I know that everyone will take care of each other and the family of this hero.

My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Comptons family, friends and coworkers. I know some of what you are going through right now. Somedays it seems like only yesterday that my brother in-law Charlotte, NC police officer Jeff Shelton and officer Sean Clark lost their lives while out on a call. Just know that you are not alone and everyone is praying for you and your families. Rest in peace Deputy Compton.

I send my heartfelt sympothies to the family, friends and collegues of Deputy Compton. Dennis was a wonderful person who I had the pleasure of knowing and seeing him perform when he was in bands in Virginia back in the day. Dennis was also a lifelong friend of my brother-in-law who he use to perform with and a friend to my husband. Please know that you will be missed bu thank you for taking the oath to protect the lives of the citizens of your community. As they say "Heros live forever" and you will live forever in our hearts.

Deputy Compton;
though you paid the ultimate sacrifice for your service, your death has opened the eye's of many of your fellow brothers and sisters in our proffesion. We respond to hundreds of false alarms throughout our career, but we must always keep in mind the danger of a perp still on scene. Rest in peace brother, knowing that we will keep the search for your killer, and we won't rest until your killer is captured or terminated.

It is very sad when a law enforcement officer is lost, even more heart breaking when it hits this close to home. Thank you for your service. A teammate mentioned he attended the academy with you and another one mentioned meeting you at a training class. All had kind words. Thank you for your service. My condolences to your family, friends, and co-workers.
