Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Trooper Shawn W. Snow

There's not a day that goes by that I don't miss you shipmate and buddy. We were suppose to go fishing after you retired in 2010. Guess folks forgot that you also served in the Navy for 6 years out of Mayport but I didn't. I never will. Miss you much.

Happy Birthday brother Shawn. Wish you were still with us to celebrate it. I didn't think I could be any prouder to be your sister but each time I hear another story of how you touched someone's life I am. You were always there for anyone who needed you, I miss you so much.

Well said Chief Philipp - He was a brother, shipmate and friend to us all. I still live in the town that Shawn suggested in '89. Happy Birthday Shawn and remember NYSP Trooper Shawn W. Snow. USN and USCG (ST1) on his birthday tomorrow. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about you shipmate and all that you did for your shipmates and friends. (Take My duty, Shawn) was always ready and willing to step-up and help.....to the very end of his watch. I remember standing your duty while you took your tests for NYSP in Albany in May'89 while the Hamilton was docked for Fleet Week NYC. Miss you brother. RM1 T.J. Marsh USCG (Ret)

With deepest regret, I have just learned today of Shawn's passing. Shawn and I served together in the U. S. Coast Guard. I had just reported in summer '88 to the USCGC Chase (WHEC-718) in Boston, MA as a relatively new Chief, and Shawn was my experienced Leading Petty Officer with common sense, humor, professional ability, and a manner that just drew people to him. The perfect sailor to help my transition back aboard a ship. A wonderful shipmate to anyone who knew him.

He had supper at my family's home in Connecticut, and I remember him telling us of his intention to eventually leave the Coast Guard and seek his dream job of being a New York State Trooper. I heartily, and selfishly, tried to convince him to stay. I recall he even told us of how he had a ready-bag of material to help people alongside the road in emergencies, before he was even a Trooper. I found it amazing that he would perform this service with no consideration for any type of help he gave except a simple 'thank you.'

I was never diligent enough to keep up with him after he left the Coast Guard, to my regret. And now, loss.

Wishing this small reflection adds to the many that tell others of this great man. I have additional stories, of his good humor, that I will save for another visit or share privately.

My deepest sympathy to all of Shawn's family and friends.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
Mary Elizabeth Frye

I remember when this happened. What a wonderful person he was. Even the tractor trailer drivers liked him which is rare. It's not fair. A man who embodied what LEO should be, and a precious human being gone.
I am so sorry.

I am privileged to post a reflection for you. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 5th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

The end of another bittersweet day is here. I am very blessed that you have left me with such wonderful friends and family, including my extended family of 'purple ties'. lol. Even though some of us only get together one day of the year, the kind words and stories of remembrance of you are comforting. It is also comforting to know they stand by the saying 'He will never be forgotten". We had a great luncheon at our house then to the Hermon cemetery then Trooper Shawn Snow Street in Ogdensburg for the laying of the wreaths. Nate and K-9 Shaw, your namesake, also joined us. At the end of the detail Shaw came over and stood right up close to me. It made me feel as if you were right there through him saying things will be OK, It was great having Mickey and Al here so they could see what a great support group we have and how they will never forget you and your sacrifice. There is always the hope that one day this date will become easier. But in the mean time all we can do is take each day as it comes and be thankful for all we have and in some way 'pay it forward' as you did every day. Love ya, Penny

Your birthday is upon us once again and though we will not be together you will certainly be in my thoughts. Hoping the happy memories of birthdays past will out weigh the sadness of you not being here to celebrate.

On the second anniversary of Trooper Snow's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Trooper Snow is not forgotten.

Uncle Shawn was the best. I can remember when we were kids he would play with us. This one time we were playing a game and he let us capture him and put him above the garage as a prisoner. I know all I know about 80's music from him, we used to play name that tune in the living room with all his 80's CDs. We were supposed to be neighbors, but he died the day after we moved in. I can't believe that its been almost a year since we lost you. It feels just like yesterday in my heart. We miss you so much! Thanks for all the pennies you leave us.

Shawn, I"LL never forget the times during Highschool just hanging out even if we didn`t go to the same school. We had such good time.
Then there was the U.S. Navy. Serving together while at Millington TN, you made your home my home. I don`t know how I would made it through it all if not for you. Even though I was not a part of the family at that time you treated me as so. There are somany things I could say,but thanks for all the memories.

Today is a day for honoring our heros. Shawn was definately a hero even though he may have not thought of himself that way. It has been a long couple of weeks with memorials from Washington D.C., to Albany and Raybrook, NY. It was comforting for our family to be surrounded by so many caring people who truly feel the same loss. So many said it was an honor to be part of the ceremonies, but the honor was ours as well for having caring helpful 'new friends' to help deal with the loss and pain. I miss Shawn so much and so many do, but I know he is still here watching over and protecting us each and every day. Thank you to all who help make each day easier to get through.
