My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Gary Gryder. Though I hadn't seen Gary since we were kids, I remember him well from growing up in Cole Creek. I'm now the wife of a fellow HPD officer and cousin of a fellow HPD officer...I can't even imagine the pain and grief his wife and family must feel at this time. Rest in peace, Gary.

Officer Gary Gryder.

Each of us who wears a badge begins our day prepared to do our duty despite the hazards that we might encounter. Rarely do we consider that one specific day might be our last. Further, the greatest threat we have is not the direct confrontation with an armed person, but the reckless, irresponsible, possibly drunken individual driving a vehicle. Nothing can really protect us from this situation. It truly is by luck, and not any actual skill, that we are spared in most of these encounters on the highway.

So to you Officer Gryer I have the greatest admiration. You took on the duty of a lawman and accepted the risks. Only our Creator can answer why it is that you have been taken from among us. Perhaps it is some part of a divine plan. In the meantime, we can only mourn your loss and leave it to others wearing the uniform to ensure to that justice is done. To apprehend and charge the individual who took your life. I, personally, have nothing but distain for those would later stand before the courts and plead for mercy when they have shown no mercy themselves. Being armed with a vehicle, loaded with alcohol and "cocked" behind the wheel to me is nothing more than intent to commit a crime. Our response should be viewing your death as an even further demand for the strictest enforcement ever toward those who would dare to take another life in the same manner.

Tonight, each of us in law enforcement should look to the sky and see not a great spanse of stars, but rather a legion of heros who gave their lives keeping a nation safe. The brightest to shine among them is the badge of the most recent to join them. Tonight is the badge of Officer Gary Gryder. Well done, officer, ....well done.

Gary,
The first time I heard your name was from the mouth of my own dad. It wasn't what a great officer you were, and you were among the best: it wasn't what a huge sportsfan you were (are there any bigger?) nor was it your being a union rep. His exact words were "Gary Gryder is one of the finest damn men you will ever meet!" Truer words were never spoken. What a tragic loss, for your family, friends, the department and the city of Houston. I am honored to have met you and worked with you. Rest in peace, Gary. You are truly missed.
