Reflections for Sergeant Richard Scott Findley

Rich,

It's been 9 months that you have been gone. It seems like it was just yesterday. The overwhelming sadness is still so fresh. We can't talk about the day you were killed - it's too painful.

Sadly 3 more officers were killed in the line of duty this weekend in California, by a thug that should have never been put back on the streets. I know exactly what those officers families and friends will be going through and I pray for them.

We do find joy in talking about the funny things you used to do and how you loved to laugh and also make people laugh. Your girls are hanging in there and as you know the police department family and fire department family is making sure of that. Your girls have become an extended part of all of our families. We will continue to watch over them, like you have done for so many of us.

RIP

IT HAS BEEN JUST OVER 8 MONTHS SINCE YOU WERE TAKEN FROM ALL OF US THAT LOVED YOU. TIME DOES GO BY TO FAST BECAUSE I STILL THINK YOU ARE GONNA JUST WALK INTO THE FIREHOUSE, AND YOU DON'T. I KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF LITTLE MIRICALS THAT YOU LEFT BEHIND, AND WE THANK YOU FOR THE ONE YOU HAVE LEFT FOR US. WE MISS YOU BROTHER AND ALWAYS WILL HAVE A HOLE WHERE YOU ONCE WERE.

Rich,
I miss you so much! Our long talks about how the county is messed up, or going on calls with you. There are days I just remember all the stupid stuff we all use to do. But one thing! I am glad you and Steve were looking out for Dean last week. I was working yet again during another incident in Beltsville. Nicole did good on her meet. Lauren is more like you everyday and Kelly is starting to get back to herself. We all miss ya.

To the family and friends of Sgt. Richard Findley and his fellow officers, and most especially to Richard:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Richard Findley was tragically killed.

To Sgt. Findley's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Richard gave to his community and the citizens of Maryland, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on June 27, 2008

To those who loved Sergeant Findley, my heart goes to you all. Know that you're not alone in this journey you walk. I lost my fiance in the line of duty January 2003 and my world was forever changed. It's been a long hard road, and even as time as gone forward, and I've found many reasons and ways to smile, I still have not forgotten the man that he was. Dennis was a beautiful person and he forever has a part of my heart, just as I'm sure Richard will always be a part of yours.

It takes a special person to put their lives on the line everyday to make this world a little safer for us all. I know many of these men never would've thought of themselves as "heroes" but they were in so many ways. It's sad that it they had to lose their lives for some of us to see that. Having said that, thank you Sergeant Findley for helping to make this world a better place. You will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg. I know this isn't a very manly thing to do, but if you happen to run into Dennis up there, please give him a big hug for the kids and I. Dennis was a good man and we miss him more than words can say.

Wishing those who loved you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne

To the daughters of Sergeant Findley,

I write to you to tell you that your father is a hero. I too lost my Dad many years ago. He also died when he was struck by a vehicle, bravely serving his community. He will always be with you. There will be times where you will absolutely know he is there, and times where it won't be so obvious, but as you grow older, your bond with him will only grow stronger.

His Department will never forget, and his brothers and sisters will see you and your Mom through the toughest of times. They will always be there for you because they know that he gave his most precious gift for them.

I know it isn't fair. I know is isn't easy. A strong faith and a strong Mom will guide you. You will make it through because that's what he would have done. Though you will never be the same, someday you will be at peace with his passing. Until then, just know that there are many other kids out there just like you, who know how you feel, who understand your loss, and who pray for you every day.

Rich,

It's hard to believe it's been 1 month today that your were tragically taken away from us. We continue to think of you every day. You gave so much to the police department and the fire department. This whole thing has been like a nightmare we can't wake up from. I know you are now a guardian angel watching over Kelly, Nicole and Lauren, and believing that helps get us through this.

RIP Rich!

Rich,

I hadn't known you long & I didn't know you well, but you were a great guy. I remember the fun you had at the U of MD football games. There were some amusing times & I know you always enjoyed going. The games will not be the same without you. The county has lost an exceptional officer & the community has lost an outstanding human being. I am honored to have known you.

Sgt Findley,
The turn-out for your funeral was truly amazing. I was told the the amount of police & fire vehicles that drove from Beltsville to Davidsonville stretched over 14 miles long. It was really nice to see cruisers from many different police and fire agencies to be lined up along 495 and RT. 50. The love shown from all the other agencies was great. I was even more shocked to see many citizens from the Beltsville community lined up as well, it showed me there are still some left to fight for in this county... It was hard not to laugh hearing the funny stories about things you would do both on and off-duty. It really showed what kind of officer, friend, and father that you were. The county needs more officers with your dedication and drive. You truly were the REAL police, and we will never forget you...Sleep easy brother, we'll take it from here...
