Reflections for Correctional Officer Jose Rivera

Jose walked a beat that few walk. It takes special people to do a job that many do not understand. Rest in peace Jose, you will never be forgotten.

I severed as a Patrol Officer in Maryland before I joined the New Jersey State Department of Correction. I know both sides of law enforcement and found that DOC is a much more dangerous job. I honor Jose's dedication to his duty and the community. I lost my best friend/brother Officer Wayne Clark on January 10th, 2006 after twenty three years. We severed together for nineteen years in NJDOC. I hope everyone understands the pride Jose had while doing what he loved. I pray for those Jose left behind and know that he still love you and will be with you everyday. I understand the pain, but know that the hurt will diminish. It will never stop but his memory will also be yours to keep for ever. Remember Jose's smile and love for you and everyone.

During a bad time when I missed my partner I think of a poem “Pennies from Heaven”. I think of this poem when I find a penny. I think;

Today on the ground I found a penny,
but not just a penny.
This penny was from an Angle in Heaven.
When the Angle misses you and
he will just toss one down just to cheer you up.

Take a moment and smile and save the penny. You to will find that Jose will send you pennies. These pennies are from your special Angle in Heaven.

Jose may God be with you and all you love.

No te preocupes herman mio, que nostros seguiresmos la lucha contra el mal en tu nombre.

To the family and friends of Correctional Officer Jose Rivera and the members of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and most especially to Jose:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Officer Rivera was tragically killed.

To Officer Rivera's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Jose gave to his community and the citizens of our country, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on June 20, 2008

To those who loved Officer Rivera, my heart goes to you all. Know that you're not alone in this journey you walk. I lost my fiance in the line of duty January 2003 and my world was forever changed. It's been a long hard road, and even as time as gone forward, and I've found many reasons and ways to smile, I still have not forgotten the man that he was. Dennis was a beautiful person and he forever has a part of my heart, just as I'm sure Jose will always be a part of yours.

It takes a special person to put their lives on the line everyday to make this world a little safer for us all. I know many of these men never would've thought of themselves as "heroes" but they were in so many ways. It's sad that it they had to lose their lives for some of us to see that. Having said that, thank you Officer Rivera for helping to make this world a better place. You will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg. I know this isn't a very manly thing to do, but if you happen to run into Dennis up there, please give him a big hug for the kids and I. Dennis was a good man and we miss him more than words can say.

Wishing those who loved you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne

I am very sorry for the family. MY prayers and best wishes are with the family. MY heart goes out for the family. My Father worked for the California Dept. of Corrections for over 20 years. I had 2 Uncles do the same amount of time. I just lost a cousin in the line of duty Officer Erik Hite (EOW 6/2/2008). I feel the families pain. Officer Rivera was a Brave man, may he REST IN PEACE for he had "THE TOUGHEST BEAT" BEST WISHES TO THE FAMILY.
