Reflections for Correctional Officer Jose Rivera

First and Foremost, my sympathies go out to all of Officer Jose Rivera's family and friends and to all of my brothers and sisters at USP Atwater. Although I was retired before Officer Rivera joined the Bureau Family, he will always be a Hero to me, just as all of those who walk behind the walls every day. Our motto everyday was, "Everyone goes home at the end of the shift." I joined the Bureau after Officer Scott Williams was killed by inmate Greene at USP Lompoc. And we "Never Forget", and we never let the inmates forget that we are always watching. I hope to eventually heal from my injuries and go back to a USP. This news makes me want to fight the fight even more and work even harder at physical therapy.

Thank you Jose Rivera for being willing to fight the fight behind the walls where not many men or women are willing to go.

To my BOP brother Jose Rivera and family;

I think about what happened to my fellow officer Jose Rivera all the time. I was part of the bus crew that transported those prisoners only three days before the incident. I didn't know you, sir, but you are always in my thoughts. Rest easy, my friend, you will always be remembered. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

It is always a sad day when an Officer falls in the line of duty. May your loved ones know that, even tho we might not have known you personally, everybody in corrections or law enforcement feels their anguish deep in our souls. May God give them strength & guidance. You might be gone, but Bureau staff will never forget!

We all take for granted that we will return home from our shift each day. All too easily it can all be taken away, all too sudden. Brother Rivera is a true hero, in my eyes and the world's eyes. When things hit this close to home for us, it makes one wonder if it's all worth it........well, it is. It's worth knowing that although never recognized, we are doing a service to our fellow-citizens and to our country. I lost a true friend and fellow Deputy Sheriff in 2000, and this brings back so many memories of that hurt. Although I did not know you Jose, YOU ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN. Rest in Peace Brother.

Websters definition of Hero:
A man of distinguished valor or enterprise in danger or fortitude in suffering; A prominent or central personage in any remarkable action or event; hence, A GREAT OR ILLUSTRIOUS PERSON!
To Jose and his family and friends: we all can proudly call you a HERO. You will never be forgotten, thank you for your ultimate sacrifice! I just know Scott (EOW 04-03-97) was waiting for you with open arms to show you around! RIP

"Dancing with the Angels"

You're dancing with the angels
Walking in new life
You're dancing with the angels
Heaven fills your eyes
Now that you're dancing with the angels

You had love for your family
Love for all people
Love for the Father, and Son
Your heart will be heard
In your unspoken words
Through generations to come
There is so much that I don't understand
But I know

You're dancing with the angels
Walking in new life
You're dancing with the angels
Heaven fills your eyes
Now that you're dancing with the angels
