Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Erik David Hite

To the friends and family of Ofc. Hite and the entire Tucson Police Department,
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. May God keep you in his prayers and help you comfort each other in your time of need. Ofc. Hite is now patrolling the streets of Heaven with our dear Lord and our "brothers and sisters" in blue who had made the Ultimate Sacrifice. Rest easy Ofc. Hite, we will take it from here brother. My sincere condolences, Ofc. Cooper

The Final Inspection

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

-Rest easy brother, we'll take the watch from here...

Erik:

My prayers are with you brother. You will be missed. You're in Heaven now, with some pretty good company... Tim and Pat will show you the ropes - God, its like FTO all over again. When you get settled in up there, keep an eye on us down here. It may seem like a long time now, but we will all be together sooner than you know.

To Erik's family: You all are in my prayers. I know how you all feel right now - It wasn't so long ago that I lost a good friend at PCSO. God bless you all... Just remember, that In Valor, there is Hope. Erik did not die in vain. Those responisble will be judged, and Erik will live forever in our hearts.

It seems like we were just here with Pat not to long ago. I had the privledge of living in the great and wonderful city of Tucson from 1989-2003. I moved back to the greater Cincinnati area five years ago to go to the police academy. I get, like most of you an email when an officer is taken from us. I work thirds tonight and am doing that normal cop stuff during the day, getting things around the house and getting some sleep. A piece of my heart died when I saw another officer taken. I have always been proud to know that only 8 TPD officers have died in the line of duty. I think of you guys often, teams 1 through 4 and the other members of the brotherhood. VON CON DIAS

When I heard the news that two Pima County officers had been wounded and Officer Hite had been killed, it made me very angry and extremely sad. In the back of my mind I worry every day about my son, Luke, who is a TPD officer. Being a 27-year veteran of the Vigo County Sheriff's Department, I know all too well that we put our lives on the line 24/7 to protect our friends, neighbors, and the citizens of our communities, and that the risk is great. This act of violence, like all the others is meaningless. Erik is a true warrior and a hero. He gave his all and he will never be forgotten. On behalf of my family and the officers at the Vigo County Sheriff's Department, I send our condolences to Erik's family, friends, and co-workers at Pima County and TPD. God Bless you Erik

This is a sad time, not only for Tucson, but for all Law Enforcement. My heart and my prayers go out to not only the immediate family of Officer Hite, but to the extended family of Law Enforcement Officers worldwide who are working to make their areas just a little safer. You have our sympathy and our support. I feel the loss of our brother along with all of you. (I grew up in Tucson, started to work for TPD; my father's suicide at the start of my testing process put this off; moved to family home of Alabama, became dispatcher, then police officer, retired, now work in Northern Alabama at Police Department as Secretary and Spanish Translator.)
