Reflections for Deputy Sheriff James Edward Throne

I share in the pain of losing someone you love. My prayers are with you in this season of change. I wish I could say it get's better, but the emptiness is always there, but memories are precious. My prayer for you is that you gain a greater insight into the love of God and how precious time is together. May God richly bless you and heal your heart.

I wrote this some time ago, after the death of a family member. It feels right to share it again.

We Sat There Laughing

I remember that time
like so many others
when you and I sat there, laughing
over nothing

and I remember thinking, then, that today was a good day,
happy,
peaceful,
content
and then I blinked,
Once
or maybe twice
and you were gone

and now I sit here, silent
but inwardly raging
over the terrible injustice of losing you

would that I knew that happy day
I could have said something to you
would have said something to you
should have said something to you

I will remember this time
unlike so many others
sitting here, waiting
to feel like I don't miss you, and don't need you here with me

I will sit here
shaking so hard, that my whole body is still
until I don't feel sad
and mad
and bad
and a whole host of things I can't even name.

But you will still be gone
and I will still be here
and I will still have to remember
that time we sat there, laughing

Deputy Throne, I was the one on the radio when your accident happened. I'm so sorry that I never knew you. I'm even more sorry that I will never get to know you. I'm sorry, every day, that I did all I knew to do, and still couldn't change what happened.

James,
It has been three weeks now and for those of us who knew you it is still hard to believe you are gone. It is not the incredible work you did that we miss. It is the person. You made work fun, and Lamont a better place. Thank you so much.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting you in person, I talked to you all the time on the radio and phone. You were always lively and chipper and sounded like you truly enjoyed your job.

I like the rest of our dispatchers always worry about our people in the field. When something happens and it goes "sideways" out there we are all on pins and needles. I like the rest of the department and community grieve your death. You have moved on to a much better place. We will now keep your family and friends in our prayers.

James callsign was Louie2, so I will say Louie2 10-98 (meaning finished with his assignment).

James is gone but will never be forgotten.

Amanda,

Although I never met James, it is abundantly clear that James was a remarkable officer – and more importantly, a remarkable husband and father. I read your letter to the media after his passing and I was both moved and inspired by your words of respect and reverence for your fallen husband. I know your children will grow to be remarkable people because of your guidance and the memory of their father. Thank you for your sacrifice and for sharing James with us.

So many kind words, James would have been overwhelmed.

I had the distinct pleasure and privilege to have worked with James both as an Extra-Help Deputy in Court Services and later as a Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Lamont Substation.

James was one of the best, young coppers I've seen in my 31 years. He did his job with enthusiasm, yet he was compassionate. He arrested gang members and dopers by the busload, yet volunteered time at local schools to show the kids the human side of being a peace officer. James was an active crime fighter, but always focused on the safety of his partners. James was a shining star, but always shifted the light to his team at the Lamont Substation. James always gave 110% at work, but always placed his wife and children as his top priority. Sounds almost too good to be true…but that was James.

James will be missed, but never forgotten. Now my prayers turn to James’ wife and children, his extended family, his brothers & sisters at the Lamont Substation, and his family at the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. May God protect each and every one of them and give us the strength to get through tomorrow.

And finally, special thanks to all of the Sheriff's Communications personnel. I can only imagine how tough it would be to handle incidents like these. I hear it in your voices on the radio. Thanks for being the angels that watch over the troops.

It is so overwhelming to see the out pour of support and and love and sympathy for my family. I love our law enforcement, especially the Kern County Sheriffs. Thank you for your prayers and thoughts for my sister, and James mom and everyone else in our family. James will be missed, but unlike what they said on the news his story, his life and his will to help people out will never be forgotten.
