"This is my shield.
I bear it before me into battle,
but it is not mine alone.
It protects my brother on my left.
It protects my city.
I will never let my brother
out of its shadow
nor my city out of its shelter.
I will die with my shield before me
facing the enemy."

From the book "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield

I remember when Throne was going thru the KCSO academy (the endless academy, it seemed, due to scheduling problems!) at his own expense during nights and weekends, and all the hours, studying, preparing uniforms, physically training, that he put in to graduate. It was a matter of bad timing afterwards; the SO had a hiring freeze. He worked extra help with no benefits, getting on with Taft PD, all so that he could work towards being a permanent deputy with KCSO. His family made sacrifices that only those of us who have also made will ever understand, all so that he could reach his goals.

The only consolation I can find today is that he died doing what he loved, working for the department that he loved and always wanted to be a part of. And to his wife and kids, please always be proud of him - he had a goal, worked hard to achieve it, and worked hard because he loved you, wanted you to have a good life, and make the world a better place.

I am so sorry for your loss; your loss is also our loss - he was a great guy.

Losing a brother officer is never easy in the law enforcement community. But this is the example of how we all put ourselves in harms was so selfishly. RIP.
