Reflections for Trooper James Scott Burns

"This is my shield.
I bear it before me into battle,
but it is not mine alone.
It protects my brother on my left.
It protects my city.
I will never let my brother
out of its shadow
nor my city out of its shelter.
I will die with my shield before me
facing the enemy."

From the book "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield

Thank you sir!

I would like to send my condolences to the family and friends of Trooper Burns and to the Texas DPS.

There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men. There is no greater contribution than to help the weak. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well.

Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.

I am leaving this reflection as I return from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC. Although we have never met, I thought of you last night during the candle light vigil held at the Memorial in which all of the heros that paid the ultimate sacrifice in 2007 were honored. This was my first year to participate in the Police Unity Tour, a 250 mile bicycle ride from Portsmouth VA to Washington DC by police officers from all over the country to raise awareness and money for the Memorial to ensure those such as yourself will never be forgotten.

I look forward to riding in your honor next year.

Rest in peace, brother. God bless you and your family.

It was so nice to finally meet you. Like you said "Not under very good circumstances". I look forward to the days to come to get to know you even better. Your little one will always know who her daddy is. And I am so thankful he had these past five or six months to be with her. I will always remember. I will be talking to you soon.

To the family of Trooper Burns I send you my sincere condolences. I lost my dad, Investigator Paul Steven Habelt a year ago to an act of senseless violence. I did not know Trooper Burns but I am in law enforcement myself and know it hurts when you lose a loved one in that way. My thoughts and prayers are with Trooper Burns' family. May God be with you and give you strength to make it through.

Trooper Burns,

We never met but I miss you, brother. I can only hope that I can live up to the standards you set. So sorry I couldn't make it to your funeral but I know we'll meet someday. Thank you for a job well done.

To your family, know that your son, brother, husband, and father is in a good place... watching us with all the other fallen heroes that have given us their all.

I will look for your name on the Texas Peace Officer's Memorial (Austin, TX) and hopefully at the National Peace Officer's Memorial (Washington, D.C.). You will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, my friend.
