Reflections for Trooper James Scott Burns

I am so sorry that you are going through this right now. I was in your situation a little over 2 years ago. Our daughter was 3 months old whenever my husband was killed. Please know you are not going through this alone. Our husbands will never be forgotten. I will always remember. I look forward to meeting you one day soon. I will try to go to the DPS Memorial service where your husband will be honored. God Bless.

My husband and I relocated to Linden, TX a few years ago and one of our first days there I was driving home very late one night, and Trooper Burns pulled me over. I apologized for not knowing the nighttime speed decrease, and told him we were pretty new to the area. He was very kind while still being professional, and commented that he appreciated my bumper sticker praising Texas music. I never forgot how personable he was and how respectful he treated me. He was a wonderful ambassador to the Northeast Texas area, and we are extremely saddened for his family's loss. We will pray that justice is swift for his assailant. We will most certainly keep all of the men and women in law enforcement in our prayers as we always do. Our son is attending the police academy in the Houston area and will soon be on the street as well. God bless you.

As a fireman i always relay on my brothers and sisters to keep us safe when we are faced with an unknown call to a domestic dispute because we are unarmed and untrained really in that area. With our wits about us we go into the void that is left by a fallen brother secure in the knowledge that i may not know you but i am you.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Great is the Peace Keeper who risks his life every shift so that others may sleep in peace. Great is the price for that peace. Trooper Burns your sacrifice was not in vain. It’s a gift to everyone, even for those that don’t appreciate it. Thank you for your service.

My condolences go out to Scott's wife and family during this sad time. I worked side by side with Scott when we were both employeed with TDCJ-ID at the Telford Unit in New Boston, until we both made career changes a few years back. He went to DPS and I went back to the Military. We all must remember the good times and love and laughter that we shared with him. Just remember that even though we will all miss Scott dearly that we will see him again one day.

In the Simple Performance of Duty

In the simple performance of duty,
he pinned on a badge,
checked his gear with a practiced eye,
and kissed his loved ones good-bye.

In the simple performance of duty,
he reported for work,
joked with his brothers at roll call
and made his last trip down the squad room hall.

In the simple performance of duty.
he answered the call
to help the helpless, to find the lost,
no matter the danger or how great the cost.

In the simple performance of duty,
he lay down his life,
for those in peril he tried to save,
our brave friend went to his grave.

In the simple performance of duty,
we honor his deed,
as we carry him to rest in a flag-draped casket,
long after the world has forgotten, we shall never forget.
Never judge or regret, what he did, In the simple performance of duty.

Love one another as I have loved you.

No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends. John 15:12-13

Trooper Burns' Family,
May God grant you the knowledge that Scott died doing what he was meant to do. May the swift arm of justice sweep down upon that individual that took Scott from us all far too early on. And may you rest easier at night, knowing that Scott will forever be watching you and your children. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
