Reflections for Trooper James Scott Burns

Scott,
My heart grieves for you and your family. I cannot verbalize the tremendous pain I felt upon hearing of your tragic death, your ultimate sacrifice for the protection of others. In your classic way and with your shy smile, you have touched the hearts and lives of many people over the years, and I thank you for that. I am thankful I knew you for so long, and was able to call you my friend.

I pray that Micah grows up knowing what an amazing father she had. With the love and support of all your TDCJ and DPS friends, hopefully she will never doubt that. I also pray that God will get Michaela and your family through this difficult time, and give them the strength and peace to focus on the many wonderful memories they had with you for the short time you were with us.

I thank you for your years of service to the people of Texas. I will keep memories of you in my heart forever--you will never be forgotten.

To Mrs. Burns and child: As you can see by all of the thoughts and prayers your husband and father is not gone. He will be with each and every one of us until the end of our time. I know he will join the army of others who are and continue to be our backup everytime we put on the uniform. Your husband, Your father, is and will continue to be a hero for eternity. Trooper Burns, please watch over all of us as we go forward to fight Evil. And God be with us as we go after those who cause grief such as this.

Brother Burns, even though we never met you are and will always be my brother. You will never be forgotten. You are a hero and we all thank you for your duties as a Police Officer. It is now your turn to watch over us all. God bless you and all your family. Say hi to my pal James A. Saavedra KIA 12/19/07. Tell him we miss him!!! I leave you with this.

“The Final Inspection”

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

“Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?”

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
“No, Lord, I guess I ain’t,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can’t always be a saint.

I’ve had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was rough,
And sometimes I’ve been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn’t mine to keep…
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I’ve wept unmanly tears.

I know I don’t deserve a place
Among the people here’
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you’ve a place for me here,
Lord, It needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t… I’ll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

“Step forward now, Policeman,
You’ve borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven’s Streets,
You’ve done your time in hell”
