I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER MY CONDOLENCES AND PRAYERS TO THE FAMILY OF TROOPER BURNS. IT IS SUCH A TRAGEDY WHEN FINE YOUNG MEN OF THIS CALIBER DIE. I PRAY THAT YOU WILL FIND STRENGTH IN OUR LORD AND SAVIOR AND KNOW THAT JAMES IS IN A BETTER PLACE, EVEN AS WE GRIEVE OVER HIS LOSS. OUR FAMILY ALSO SUFFERED SUCH A LOSS IN SEPTEMBER, 2007, AS OUR SON-IN-LAW, DAVID CAMDEN, A POLICE OFFICER FOR THE TEMPLE, TEXAS, POLICE DEPT., DIED WHILE PROVIDING AN ESCORT FOR A FUNERAL. I PRAY THAT IN YOUR TIME OF SORROW THAT YOU WILL FIND A STRENGTH IN GOD THAT WILL SUSTAIN YOU. I WILL NOT TELL YOU THAT YOU WILL SOON FORGET OR THAT TIME WILL HEAL YOUR HURTS, BECAUSE THERE WILL ALWAYS BE REMINDERS AND THE TEARS WILL FLOW AGAIN. BUT I DO KNOW THAT GOD WILL SUSTAIN YOU AND WILL HOLD YOUR HAND IF YOU JUST REACH FOR IT. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AS YOU SEEK HIS PEACE.

YOUR COURAGE TO TRAVEL THE LONG DARK ROADS TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE MANY PEOPLE OF THIS AREA WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. THERE IS NOT A DAY THAT GOES BY THAT I DO NOT RECONIZE THE DANGER OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. MY SON, SERVES IN THE CAPACITY OF A POLICE OFFICE AND I AM VERY PROUD AND DON'T TRY TO SHOW THE WORRY THAT I HAVE, KNOWING THE DANGER HE FACES. YOU SERVED YOUR AREA WELL, GOD CALLED YOU HOME DOING WHAT YOU COMMITTED YOURSELF TO DO. IT IS HARD TO ASK "WHY?" BUT WE ARE ONLY ON LOAN FROM OUR HEAVELY FATHER. GOD WILL KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE AND YOUR DAUGHER WILL ALWAYS KNOW HER DAD WAS A HERO, AND WHEN SHE LOOKS INTO THE HEAVENS AND SEES THE BRIGHTEST STAR SHE WILL KNOW YOU WILL BE LOOKING DOWN ON HER AND WALKING WITH HER IN SPIRIT AND KEEPING HER SAFE. GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY AND ALL YOUR ASSOCIATES IN LAW ENFORCMENT.

Trooper Burns you took an oath to protect and serve the citizens of Texas and this great country. In the performance of duty, you made the ultimate sacrifice. There is no greater example of honor. May your loved ones, friends , co-workers find peace. May the citizens realize the sacrifice made by the law enforcement officers every second of every day.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Burn's Family. I hope God gives his family courage and perseverance to endure what may come. May God watch over his wife and baby girl. She will grow up knowing her daddy was a HERO to all. As a wife of a trooper, I always wonder each time he walks out the door to begin his shift if it will be the last time I will see him. I know God will give her the strength to wake each day and know he is protecting them from heaven. Trooper Burns will be forever in our hearts!

The Final Inspection

The trooper stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, trooper.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The trooper squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the trooper waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, trooper,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come drive a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

The cadets and staff of the 58th Oklahoma Highway Patrol Academy would like to show their utmost respect and honor to Trooper James Burns. You brought light into a world of darkness. You were courageous in your actions. A soldier who was not afraid to capture the front lines and pour your heart into the battle. You swung your sword and danced among the thieves in order to bring justice to a world in need. You are not only a warrior but a poet to your family, the rock in which they leaned upon. We honor your sacrifice and love, what a passion only to be admired by all. We, as cadets and soon to be Troopers, can only hope to carry the tradition and dedication in which you expressed in your daily walk as a Trooper.
To the family of Troopers Burns, our hearts and prayers cry out for you. May the Lord place his healing hands on your pain and give you strength and endurance. God bless each and every one of you!
Trooper Burns we have your watch, Rest in Peace, Sir.

Rest in your peaceful heavens State Trooper Burns. You will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, friends and also all fellow officers. I was one of the EMT's on the scene that Tuesday night. I was saddened to be there in that situation, but was also proud to be in the presence of a true hero. We will miss you in our area, but we know you will be there in spirit, still guiding us and protecting us.
