Go dtuga Dia duit
tuar ceatha i ndiaidh gach stoirme
gáire i ndiaidh gach deoire
do gach cúram - gealltanas
agus beannacht i ngach buaireamh
is le gach fadhb an tsaoil
cara dílis a bheas ann.
do ghach osna - amhrán milis
agus freagra do ghach paidir.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Owens and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Officer Owens has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Owens, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer Owens is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

For those who pledge to uphold it, Freedom requires a sacrifice the protected will never know.

I cried when I watched this story play-out a few weeks ago; I just viewed Mr. Owens' father being interviewed. What a distinguished gentleman and what a peaceful soul to be able to speak so eloquently and beautifully about the life of his son. I am so sorry for the family's loss. Mr. Owens' father's grace and his ability to still see the good in the world are truly amazing.

Having been born and raised in Cleveland and retired with 25 years service from the Columbus PD, I was sadden to hear the news of another officer killed in the line of duty. I've attended far too many officers funerals and each time it happens it leaves a family with a deep void. We are truly the thin blue line of defense. May his wife and children find peace and comfort knowing he gave the supreme sacrifice protecting the citizens of Cleveland.

To Ericka, their children, and his family, May God be with all of you in this difficult time. I have never had the pleasure of meeting you or your family, but you are the perfect ideal of what a family should be. Know that you are all loved, because if you love God then you know love. No one knows how long a person will recover enough to push forward and this is why your children will be your greatest support. My children's smile and love helped me through many bad times. Rest in peace Officer Derek Owens, my heart is truly troubled because our children are going astry. We need to stop being pals with our children and start learning how to be parents whether married or single, these children need to be taught discipline and respect. I am seeing too many children giving or having no respect towards others. Adults we must get ourselves in order as well as our homes, because the product of an unruly child starts at home, and being a single parent is not a good enough excuse to leash havoc on our communities. THANK YOU to all Officers of the law because this is a job many will not perform. It takes real courage to brave these heartless criminals!

I am deeply saddened by this. I worked with Derek at Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court when we were both probation officers in the University Circle office. This is a stunning and horrible tragedy. May God be with his wife and his children in this dark time.
