A perfect example of the inherent dangers police face on what many times is a seemingly "routine" or minor call. Officer Owens, thank you for your service and please know that your sacrifice is one that will never, ever be forgotten by your LE brethren. Rest in peace always.

Delaware State Police (Retired)

In November 2008 one of the suspects was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole.

If so, why was he free to kill again?

This officer lost his life because our system failed, again.

Officer Owens,

Today at the Fourth District I read the brief description posted on this page of your end of watch aloud at roll call for B platoon. I never knew you. Every day I walk by your locker and tap on it on the way to get ready for my shift just to acknowledge your presence. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. Your brothers and sisters at the fourth district will never forget you, your family or your sacrifice.

I was watching a program on television just now. At the end of the program there was a statement that said "In remembrance of officer Derek Owens of the Cleveland Police Department." Until I watched this program I knew not who Derek is. I know now he is one of my brethren in the thin blue line. And now that I know your name and your story Derek you will always be with me, as are others, for the length of my days. Rest in peace and know that others continue your work for you. Thank you for everything you did while you were in this life with us. Prayers for you and your loved ones.
