COURAGE

Many years ago in a hospital, I got to know a little boy named Paul who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. His only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from his five year old sister, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to his little sister, and asked the girl if she would be willing to give her blood to her brother. I saw her hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save Paul". As the transfusion progressed, she lay in a bed next to her brother and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to his cheeks. Then her face grew pale and her smile faded. She looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?" Being young the girl had misunderstood the doctor; she thought she was going to have to give him ALL her blood.

This story reminds me of the courage of Trooper Kara M. Kelly-Borgognone as she gave the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of the state of Nevada and a personal sacrifice for those lucky enough to receive life from her donated organs. Rest in peace Trooper, you will not have to wait for your wings.

I was in Las Vegas, Nevada at an all female Street Survival Seminar, at the time of your tragic loss. You would be honored to know how moved and honored we (a room full of 300+ female officers)all were to have learned of Kara's heroism and Law Enforcement service. I am truly sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family, especially those precious girls that were so unfairly left without a mother. May God bless you all!
