Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant William King Biggs, Jr.

'Why is it that when memories are happening, you don't know that they are going to be memories, so you don't get to appreciate them until it's too late'.

My Brother

Although I never met him, I knew him.

He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.

He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what

they represent.

He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his

community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.

He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.

He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.

He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.

He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became

frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.

He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he

never wavered.

He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.

He longed for his family during the long hours.

He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely

weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.

He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling

and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.

He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.

He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the

people he served.

He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to

be the best he could be.

He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.

He was a cop, he was my brother.

To the Family, Friends, Fellow Officers, and the entire Kirkwood Police Deptartment,

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Husband, Father, Friend, and Sergeant! Although I didn't know him as I did Officer Tom Ballman, I know that he is a HERO who dedicated his life to the safety and service of his community. What a truly sad time it is for you, the city of Kirkwood, and the entire nation! I pray that God will allow you to feel the presence of your beloved one surrounding you during this time. Because of Sgt. Biggs brave actions, he saved many more lives. May he rest in the arms of our Lord now in Heaven with his brothers Tom and Mac.

Sarge,
I cannot tell you how much my heart hurts for you and Tom, your families, and KPD. I always knew that it would be a fun shift when you were working. I remember your cowboy stories, I remember you giving me trouble for dating a fireman, I remember your smile and your laugh. Your brothers and sisters are going to miss you, hell, they already do. Please watch over them and keep them safe. Someday we will meet again.

The Passion

Ring….ring.
The secretary answers the phone.
“Gods’ office, this is Helen, how can I help you?”
“Helen, this is St Peter. Tell the boss there’s another police officer at the gates.”
“Oh no, not another one……I’ll tell him.”

Ring….ring.
“Pearly Gates, St. Peter speaking.”
“Pete,” God said, “Please ask the police officer to see me right away.”
“Yes sir.”

“Is this one special sir?” Helen asks.

God looked at Helen and solemnly said:
“No…..no more than any of the others. But as a group, my police officers are one of my proudest creations. They are the only thing standing between the beautiful world I created and its’ total destruction at the hands of Satan. Yet I cannot give them special powers to protect themselves or others. They must stand alone as human beings, be judged as human beings, and die as human beings. To give them special powers would separate them from others and they would no longer be human.”

Then God looked at Helen again, shaking his head, “And that is what amazes even me. I created them as mere humans, like all the rest. Where did this passion for humanity come from?”

“When he arrives please send him in, and clear the rest of my afternoon. We’ll need some time together.”

Rest in peace brother. And may Gods love comfort your friends loved ones left behind

Bill,

God really must have wanted you in the worst way to take you away from us. Our last conversation Thursday night was about horses and goats. I can still hear your laughter echoing in the office. As your FTO so many years ago, we talked about family, life, and being out under the stars. I am left wondering if I forgot to tell you something about being safe, if I failed as your FTO. I will miss your smile, the twinkle in your eyes. Rest with God, Bill.

We are still reeling here in Los Angeles, but as one who once lived in Misouri, I would like to extend my sincere condolence to the Family and friends of the Kirkwood Police Department.

I could easily type that Lucifer was having fun wreaking havoc nationwide, on 02/07/2008. Rather I will type that God requested that his Honor Guard be supplemented.

May You Rest - In - Peace.

Sgt. Biggs gave me my physical entry exam and said, "For an old guy you still got it". Sgt Biggs was my Sgt. when I left St. Louis City PD to work for Kirkwood. He was a great person. He was a dedicated police officer, who was kind to all. His character was impeccable and he was my friend. We called him Bill. We talked about life and how good it was. I remember the 2nd shift BBQ's and the Green Tree Festivals we worked together. He loved his family,he loved his job and he took care of his officers.

Bill, we will carry on and we will continue the battle for you and all who came before you. To all the Kirkwood Police Officers that I worked with, stay strong, believe in God for your strength and keep up the good fight. That's what Bill would want you to do.

God bless the Biggs and Ballman families.
