Reflections for Police Officer Randal David Simmons

"Here am I, Send Me!"

The bell has rung, the time is here.
We must face our challenges
and show no fear.
I have my brothers, to my left and my right.
We are trained and stand ready
To "fight the good fight."

We arrive on scene and hear the information.
We strap on our gear
with nervous anticipation.
My teammates sit focused, with a thousand yard stare.
We all may be nervous
but no one is scared!

Silent prayers go up in the night
from our families at home
who tremble with fright.
We pray as well, to our almighty Father
"Give us wisdom and strength,
let us serve with honor."

For this is the job we were called to do.
We did not ask for this fight
but now, we'll see it through.
I thank you Lord, for the men on this team,
who stand and proclaim,
"Hear am I, send me!"

Isaiah 6:8 "I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Hear am I, send me!"

To the family and friends of Officer Randy Simmons and the members of the Los Angeles Police Department, and most especially to Randy:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Officer Randy Simmons was tragically killed.

To Randy's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

Reading the many loving and admiring reflections, I know that Randy lived a faith-based life, that he led by example, and that he lived his life with a profound sense of duty. He was one of God's many gifts to humanity.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Randy gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 7, 2008

To those who loved Officer Simmons, my heart goes to you all, especially to his fiancee. Know that you're not alone in this journey you walk. I lost my fiance in the line of duty January 2003 and my world was forever changed. It's been a long hard road, and even as time as gone forward, and I've found many reasons and ways to smile, I still have not forgotten the man that he was. Dennis was a beautiful person and he forever has a part of my heart, just as I'm sure Randy will always be a part of yours.

It takes a special person to put their lives on the line everyday to make this world a little safer for us all. I know many of these men never would've thought of themselves as "heroes" but they were in so many ways. It's sad that it they had to lose their lives for some of us to see that. Having said that, thank you Officer Simmons for helping to make this world a better place. You will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg. I know this isn't a very manly thing to do, but if you happen to run into Dennis up there, please give him a big hug for the kids and I. Dennis was a good man and we miss him more than words can say.

Wishing those who loved you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne

Rest in peace dear son of all of us mothers who have lost our beautiful children while they were protecting the citizens of our land. My condolences to your family, your fellow officers and especially to the community that will be without your service. We give our children to the world after we bear, nurture, love and teach them to go forward with honor. The pain of losing a child is without description. May your family find peace.

I am a cavalry scout in the US Army and my mother was a sheriff's deputy in Texas when I was a boy. I remember how scared I was every time she went to work. Her partner was wounded after she retired and the man he was with was killed (Clay Madrano). As a soldier and combat veteran, I respect any man who has the guts to be a police officer in this country. At Randy's age, he could have sat behind a desk or put in retirement papers, but he chose to lead from the front.

Thank God that such a man lived. His family has a man they can forever be proud of.

SWAT is the last line of defense against criminals. The honor given with the title of SWAT is grand.

-some people live to protect and serve, some people die to protect and serve.-

This is the first time that I have heard about officer Simmons being killed. It is a very sad thing, but what can anyone do? Even giving money cannot heal the wounds.

Officer Simmons,

I salute you and your ultimate sacrifice. SWAT Operators are called upon to handle situations that most people would run from. You dedicated over half of your life serving and protecting. I can only hope to stand as tall as you over the course of my career.

RANDY WAS A GREAT PERSON EVEN IN HIGH SCHOOL WHEN I MET HIM. ONE DAY WE WALKED FROM FAIRFAX HIGH TO LOS ANGELES HIGH AND I REMEMBER RANDY GIVING ME GOOD ADVICE THAT DAY. WE LIFTED WEIGHTS TOGETHER. HE HAD GREAT TRICEPS AND I ALWAYS WORKED ON MY TRICEPS REMEMBERING HOW GREAT RANDY'S LOOKED. THEY CALLED HIM SAMBO, DON'T KNOW WHY AND THE NAME WASN'T USED IN A DEROGATORY MANOR. TO MY GREAT FRIEND, THANKS FOR THE GOOD ADVICE THAT DAY. IT WAS A HONOR TO KNOW YOU.

JUST ANOTHER DAY

It was a day like today.
Just another day.
“Hours of Boredom Punctuated With Seconds of Terror.”

Just another day – but a day unlike all others.

The day the defender became the victim.
The day the chaos breached the “thin blue line”.

My son, Tom Ballman was killed om a massacre of 5 people in Kirkwood, Mo on this same day. He was only 37 yrs old and had two small children_ 3 and 5 yrs old. He was my only son and I grieve tremendously for this loss. I know you are grieving just like I.

I know that I lost parents, husbands - but nothing is as bad as losing a child. I ache for him.

May God hold you in his arms as I pray he does for me.
