Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Dustin Shawn Duncan

Hey, this is hard brother, but i wanted to say i miss ya. I didn't know you for long, just the time that you were with our department, but you were a friend and I thought alot of you. You were a coworker's dream, you were always easy to get along with and pleasant, and as far as backup, your size spoke for itself. I don't know of anyone that didn't speak highly of you, I know I do...... keep watchin over us........

Thank you.May you rest in peace. My prayers are with your family daily.

Forgive me for missing the anniversary of your E.O.W., but I felt as though I could not continue to read about so many tragedies. I now realize the visit each day to leave a word of encouragement and hope to the loved ones of others, helps me to remember that I am not alone with my pain and heartbreak. So may I say to your friends and loved ones that my thoughts and prayers are with them now and always. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol and may they know you will never be forgotten.

It has been 9 1/2 months since you were taken from us and all that keeps me smiling when I think of you not being with us anymore is the times we had at the academy, And Boy did we have some times. I miss you everyday of my life but I am honored to have known you and the pleasure to call you my friend. Keep up the watch up there because with you and Danny to watch over us we have got to be ok. To those who loved Deputy Duncan, my heart goes to you all, especially to his fiancee. Know that you're not alone in this journey you walk. I lost my fiance in the line of duty January 2003 and my world was forever changed. It's been a long hard road, and even as time as gone forward, and I've found many reasons and ways to smile, I still have not forgotten the man that he was. Dennis was a beautiful person and he forever has a part of my heart, just as I'm sure Dustin will always be a part of yours.

It takes a special person to put their lives on the line everyday to make this world a little safer for us all. I know many of these men never would've thought of themselves as "heroes" but they were in so many ways. It's sad that it they had to lose their lives for some of us to see that. Having said that, thank you Deputy Duncan for helping to make this world a better place. You will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg. I know this isn't a very manly thing to do, but if you happen to run into Dennis up there, please give him a big hug for the kids and I. Dennis was a good man and we miss him more than words can say.

Wishing those who loved you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne

Hey Dustin,
Tomorrow it will be 4 months since you left us to be able to look down on us and keep us safe from heaven. I hope you haven't terrorized the streets of heaven with your stunt driving! But with our other friend Danny watching over you, how could you go wrong. I talked to your Dad the other day, I hated to ask about you, but then I needed to know what went wrong. I knew in my soul that it was something that was out of your control. But even tho your not here with us, you are never far from our thoughts. I saw Carl a couple of months ago at one of our trainings, it made me think of all of our fun times at the academy. You know the crazy group from Southeastern Oklahoma, and we were darn proud of it. I will always carry you in my heart. I went to the memorial at the DPS Center in Oklahoma city last month, and I had to make a special trip just to have the honor of seeing your name and the sadness also to know why it was there. I have a picture of it on my phone, so I can always see your name and the ultimate sacrifice that you made. There are no words to let anyone know the honor I feel and the love I have for my dear friend. I miss you Dustin, so watch over all of us still here to carry on the watch, and we pray that we make you proud of us.

Dustin (Bubba Gump),

I still can’t believe that you are no longer with us. It just seems like yesterday when you, Mary, Thomas, and I were at the Academy. Those were some good times, especially watching you on the LEDT course. I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything. Thank you. I’m especially glad to have work with you during my short time in Bokoshe. You will always be in my memories and thoughts. Thanks for being a friend and brother in law enforcement.

Dustin,

It was just the other day I was thinking about the time you started with the LeFlore County Sheriff's Office. I remember when I was wishing I was old enough to work the road. I wanted to thank for always letting me ride with you. I wanted to thank you for letting me drive your car the first night I was certified to be a deputy. I wanted to thank you for being there for my first DUI and drug arrest. I am sorry I never told you this before. The last time I though about it was when I was working the accident that took my friends life, and I will never forget that day. I want you to know you are a great friend and brother. A person I could always count on. You will be greatly missed.
I will see you again

Dustin,
It has been 2 1/2 months since you left us to patrol and keep us safe from heaven. It is still hard to talk about you to this day, not from any regrets but from the shock and broken heart that I will never get to hear you say "Hey Mert!". I will have to wait until we meet again and we can discuss our academy days and the good times and friends that we had there. I say its not fair that you and Danny were taken from us, but then I feel honored that you were given to us to call friend if even for to short of a time. I think of you everyday my friend, and will always be proud to have known, the big man with the big heart. You were such a godsend to us that knew and loved you. Try not to do the serpentine cone test at 45 mph while your there, you could just scare the pants off someone, but then again it will make everyone there laugh, just as you did for us at the academy. Your smile, laughter and overall warm heartedness will be forever missed here on this earth. You and Danny keep the rest of us safe here while we are assigned to do our duty on this earth. Your mom, dad, Brandi, Misty and the kids are always in my prayers. I love you my brother & special friend. I miss you!!!!

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Duncan and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Deputy Duncan has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Duncan, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Deputy Duncan is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

For those who pledge to uphold it, Freedom requires a sacrifice the protected will never know.
