This is such a sad story. My heart breaks for this Officer who was just trying to do her job, and a baby who never had a chance. Because of some crazed lunatic loose on the streets. If this person had such mental problems in the past, maybe he should not have been out on the streets. To the family of this fine Officer: You are in my prayers. I know that is little comfort in this terrible time, but hopefully it will sustain you in the fututre.

While I never had the opportunity to meet Officer Cotton, her smiling duty photo paints the picture of a woman who loved her job. May justice be served for the man, a pathetic excuse for a man, for he will have to answer to a higher power. God bless, Officer, watch over your brothers and sisters.

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want,
His comforting hand reduces fear to naught;;
He makes me walk through streets of crime,
But He gives me courage
and peace of mind.

He leads me by still waters in the path I trod,
And He says in Romans I'm a "minister of God",
He leads me in righteousness
as He restores my soul,
for His name's sake He keeps me whole.

When I walk through death's valley,
right up to the door;
I will fear no evil, for He comforts me more;
For Thou art with me every step of the way,
As thy rod and thy staff protect me each day

He prepares a table, especially for me,
As I work daily among life's enemies;
He gives me authority to uphold the law,
And He anoints my position
in the midst of it all

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me,
Each day of my life through eternity;
As I long to hear Him say,"Well done...,"
When I lay down my life,
my badge, and my gun.

I found this poem posted on another officers memorial page and thought that it was fitting for you. may GOD BLESS YOU GIRL. I am sure he already has. so....how is it behind heavens pearly gates? May GOD also BLESS the family of miss cotton that is left behind to mourn.

Dear Nicola,

I never met you, I live more than a thousand miles away. I don't know why but I cannot get what happened to you out of my mind ever since I read the story yesterday on this website. I hate that you died the way you did, alone. I know you fought with everything you had and I wish I could've been there to help you. I lost my best friend (Sean Laura, EOW: 9-20-97, 0710 hours) more than 10 years ago in the line of duty and I suffered the sight of seeing him lay lifeless in the street after being run over by a fellow officer as he chased a car thief. I remember the sense of helplessness I felt that I couldn't get to him fast enough to save him. I hate that you didn't experience the joy of backup arriving in time. I've fought with people I was arresting and two minutes waiting for backup seems like an eternity. I wish you had a Taser. I can't imagine the terror you must've felt knowing this man took your baton and gun and no one is running up to stop him. I hate that you went out like that, alone. I'm not ragging on your co-workers because I know they were doing 100-mph to get to you when you called for assistance. I cried just thinking of them pulling up and seeing how badly injured you were. This job puts us in some tough positions and we all, as police officers, hope we survive it.

Nicola, as I said of my late partner, I salute you for doing your job when you could've just drove by and did nothing. You chose to act and you made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the people you swore to serve and protect. You kept your word, you fought the good fight and you finished the race.

Job well done, Officer Cotton

See you on the other side

I pray for everyone that has been affected by you and your unborn child's sudden loss of life - when you were only trying to protect ours. Godspeed Officer Cotton may you both rest in peace.
