Reflections for Police Officer Eric Cecil Barker, Sr.

Eric

It was one year ago today, we learned of the horrible loss Dekalb County PD, yours and Ricky's family, and community experienced. We recognized you and Ricky at our Candle Vigil this past December. In fact four of your Honor Guard came up to help us honor the two of you. We will never forget you.

To those who loved Officer Barker, my heart goes to you all, especially to his fiancee. Know that you're not alone in this journey you walk. I lost my fiance in the line of duty January 2003 and my world was forever changed. Even as time as gone forward, and I've found many reasons and ways to smile, I still have not forgotten the man that he was. Dennis was a beautiful person and he forever has a part of my heart, just as I'm sure Eric will always be a part of yours.

It takes a special person to put their lives on the line everyday to make this world a little safer for us all. I know many of these men never would've thought of themselves as "heroes" but they were in so many ways. It's sad that it they had to lose their lives for some of us to see that. Having said that, thank you Officer Barker for helping to make this world a better place. You will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg. I know this isn't a very manly thing to do, but if you happen to run into Dennis up there, please give him a big hug for the kids and I. We miss him more than words can say.

Wishing those who loved you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne

Eric I speak for the fellow men and women who served with you at the Dekalb County Police Department-South Precinct-Evening Watch. Your sense of humor, strong values, inherent wisdom, dilligent work ethics, presence as a fellow officer and true friend will be deeply missed. Over the last four years that we have worked with you....you have shown us how to be a fair, respectful, and aggressive officer. More importantly you were a great friend who would give the shirt off your back to help others in need. Eric you lived a exemplary life and left behind a legacy that most would only dream of by your faith in God, commitment to your family and duties as a Police Officer and in the Armed Forces. You served well....may you rest in peace.

I still can't believe you're gone. You always made us laugh in the 66th academy. We hated to see you leave us for Afghanistan. Most of us cried. You still managed to crack a joke at your farewell and make us all laugh. You could find a way to make people laugh in just about any situation. The department lost a great officer, but we all lost an even greater person.

We will always remember Officer Eric Barker, and honor his name and his service. In his memory, we will never give up the fight against the vermin that infest our communities. But for those who brought down our brother, "The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth." (Psalm 34:16)

Rest in Peace Officer Barker.

To the friends and family of Officer Barker I offer you my condolences. I'm sure Officer Barker was a great man, soldier and police officer. A rare breed amongst men to serve his country and then serve his community. I'm from Miami, FL where to many brothers in blue have fallen in recent months. Watch over all the soldiers and police officers from your place in Heaven. We'll keep up the good fight!

As a former Police officer facing daily danger, I know the type of man your Eric Barker was. A decent citizen duly appointed to serve his community. I'm disabled, though not from anything I faced during my Police service.
This man with whom I'm proud to have two connections with:

1. Police officer.
2. His Name which we share.

May the Police Service there help and assist his family. May they in due time, know that he did not die in vain. He was a man trying in his own way to create a safe place for his community to live in. I pray His family are supported in their loss.

God go with you Eric, I pray too for your family. May they find comfort in their grief. God Bless them and those who look after them.

"We Remember the Officers"
We remember the officers who changed our lives,
The men and woman who protected us day and night,
People who respect for their dedication to the cause,
For when faced with danger, they never even pause.

We remember the officers who always stood true,
Whatever the color of uniform, brown gray or blue,
With pride and integrity they say "To serve and protect",
For the giving of their life, we offer our respect.

We remember the officers who we never really knew,
Persons strong enough to answer the challenge are few,
With heavy hearts we mourn the officers in eternal rest,
There's more to these people than the badge on their chest.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Barker and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Officer Barker has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Barker, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer Barker is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

For those who pledge to uphold it, Freedom requires a sacrifice the protected will never know.

May God be with the family, friends and Dept. of Officer Barker during their time of bereavement. It's always tragic to lose a loved one unexpectantly to some cowards like this. God Bless you my brother in Law Enforcement. You're untimely death will not be in vain for we'll continue the fight to protect and serve and bring criminals to justice. Now gear up and grab a beat in Heaven we'll see you soon.
