Reflections for Detective Kevin George Hawkins

To the Family of Detective Kevin Hawkins,

My husband Robert just lost his life to Kidney Cancer on 5/12/09 He was diagnosed Stage 4 renal cell carcinoma january 07. He also worked down at ground zero after that horrible day. We just had our second child on 4/9/09. I came across Det Hawkins name doing research on the health effects the workers were coming down with from 9/11/01. My husband worked as a Transit cop in coney island he had 16 yrs on the job. I miss him dearly. I know the pain your family is going through. They are true heroes as they made the ultimate sacrifice helping people in need. I will pray for your family
May Detective Kevin Hawkins and my husband Robert rest in peace cause I know they both fought this disgusting disease.

I Lived behind Kevin for 11 years. I know he was very proud to be part of the NYCPD as well as being a MARINE.I always saw him with his family. We would talk about trying to make some overtime to pay bills and he would say he just worked 15 hours. But there he was 15 minutes later with Natalie on his shoulders walking to the pool. We lost 23 Members of this department on 9/11. Now it is up to 31 members. Never forget. Thank You to other POLICE DEPARTMENTS around the country for caring. KEVIN says THANK YOU!

I am writing this on the first anniversary of your EOW. I will never forget the
horror of that beautiful Sept. day in 2001. I could scarcely believe my eyes
as I sat glued to the t.v. and still can't comprehend man's inhumanity to man.
I will never understand what you had to endure in your efforts to find the remains of your brothers and sisters that you never knew, but loved nonetheless. And then after all your efforts to help others, this disease took
you. 20 years of service and this is how it all ends. Your sacrifice was too
great and as a grateful nation, we can NEVER repay you. Thank you so much
for loving your community as well as this great nation. With love from one
coast of America to the other.

He was my only sibling and was my life. We were 3 years apart and always were close. He was my role model....my Best Friend....my Hero. I was with him the final 2 weeks of his life....He NEVER gave up! He was a US Marine Vet...a Father...and a Husband. I will NEVER forget him.

When 9/11 struck the world, I was a rookie. I listened to teh radio reports of those killed at the time. It was the first day that I understood what it meant to be a part of the brotherhood that is Policing.

It saddens me deeply to hear that we are still losing brave heros from that tragic day.

Prayers and thoughts sent for Detective HAWKINS, family, friends and colleagues of all those that suffered from that terrible day.
