Reflections for Police Officer Christopher Nicholson

A tragic loss for the family and department. This young man was providing a protective service to the community and should be rememembered for his bravery. As a former resident of the area, I am saddened to hear of such violence in the community.

On December 19th, 2007 the law enforcement community lost a proud member of its own, and I lost a best friend.

During his short, but proud law enforcement career, Ofc. Nicholson showed the upmost dedication to his job and his community. Ofc. Nicholson peformed his job duties with sacrifice and tenacity.

While Ofc. Nicholson strived to be a great cop, he was an even better friend. During our Police Academy session, I had the opportunity to get to know Chris on a personal level as well as professional. During our session, Chris and I became friends. Chris would have (and did) anything for his friends, and even claimed he would "take a bullet" for us if need be. He was a brother to me, both as a cop, and as a friend.

Chris was steadfast in his belief that he would advance in both his career and his life to the fullest that it could be. He was always words of wisdom during the hard times, and he would comfort anyone in their time of need.

The world will never be the same without this great man. I do not know how or when those who knew and loved him will be able to return to "a normal life." While I am sad and heartbroken, I can only feel the fullest empathy for his family.

Chris would not want us to live in this time of sorrow forever, but would tell us to man-up and do what needs to be done. I am confident that we will be able to take something from this tragedy, each in our own way. While we have accepted the risk and challenge the possibility, it does not ease the pain of this work. All I can do now, is strive to be the best officer, and man, that I can be, so that Chris' sacrifice is not in vain.

May Officer Christopher Nicholson be with every officer as we walk that long, lonley, dangerous beat. May he keep us safe and sane in our time of need.

I miss you, brother. You were the best! You were loved by many, and understood by few.

Rest In Peace, Brother Nicholson. Heaven has just received it's newest member to the force. May justice be served in your name.

It is with great regret having to hear this news, especially when it hits so close to home. The only bigger regret is not having gotten the chace to know Off. Nicholson when he worked in a neighboring dept. not more than just a few miles away. After learning of Off. Nicholson's death, I immediately spoke to a friend who had just recently left the W.P.D. for the Wash. Co. Sheriff's Office. He stated that if he had not been off on scheduled leave, this call most likely would have been his, putting him in the exact same situation as that of Off. Nicholson. It's hearing things like this that really put the dangers of this job in complete perspective for anyone on the job. But you know what, it's because of officers like Christopher Nicholson and all of the others who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line duty doing what they love and what is their passion that keep the rest of us doing what we do. The thoughts and prayers of all the members of the Waynesboro, PA Police Dept. go out to Off. Nicholson and his family. God bless.

At a time like this, words are so inadequate. However, please know that my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Officer Chris Nicholson. It was my privilege and pleasure to work with Chris during this past year's Maryland Chiefs' Challenge campaign. He was conscientious, caring, funny, and hard-working.

As a person of faith, the only way with which I can come to terms with such a senseless, tragic death is to think that God must have needed Chris to be one of those bright, shining stars that help to light the way for the rest of us. It also makes me feel that it is our duty to carry on the good deeds and lifesaving efforts which were important to Chris. May the love and sympathy of his many friends help his mother and girlfriend in this terrible time of sorrow.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

A Part Of America Died,

Somebody killed a policeman today,
And part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
And spend many long lonely nights.
The beat he walked was a battle field too
just as if he had gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
In your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And stands at each new rookies' side.
He answered the call,of himself and gave his all,
And a part of America died.
