I remember seeing you around Smithsburg. You waved to me and my kids when you were in the parade. Although, I didn't know you personally, I could tell you were a true, compasionate man who would do anything for anybody. It is a shame your life was snuffed out way too soon, because one horrible person could not control his anger. You will forever be a hero to me and my family. Rest In Peace.

We deal with the insanity each day and pray that all go home safely to be with their loved ones. On December 19, I, along with many others, lost a colleague and a friend. PT WAS HARD AND AS WITH MOST CADETS IN THE ACADEMY, THERE COMES NICKMANES, YOUR'S WAS "SMITHSBURG." I YELLED YOUR NAME ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASSION, YOU KEPT GOING AND NEVER QUIT. I NEVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH YOU EVEN THOUGH OUR AGENCIES ARE SO CLOSE. THROUGH SPEAKING WITH MANY OF MY FRIENDS AT THE WCSD, WHO HAD THE OCCASSION TO WORK WITH YOU ON A DAILY BASIS, YOU WERE A STAND UP/OUT POLICE OFFICER. THAT TRAGIC NIGHT MY PAGER WENT OFF ALONG WITH MY CELL PHONE, IT FOREVER CHANGE MY LIFE. WHEN I READ THE MESSAGE, I KNEW IMMEDIATELY WHAT I HAD TO DO. THE SAME AS YOU WOULD HAVE FOR ME, GO TO YOU AND RENDER ASSISTANCE TO MY FELLOW OFFICER. I WAS THERE WHEN THE SUSPECT WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. AFTER HE WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY THE ONLY THING ON MY MIND WAS, " HOW IS CHRIS". THEN WE GOT THE NEWS, THAT YOU HAD PASSED AND WERE NOW WITH THE LORD. MY HEART IS HURTING FOR A FELLOW BROTHER IS NOW GONE. BUT I CAN TELL YOU MY FRIEND, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN, I CAN PROMISE YOU THAT. GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU AND YOU WILL NEVER HURT AGAIN. YOU WILL BE WAITING ON ME, AS ONE DAY I WILL JOIN YOU. WHEN I SEE YOU, THE FIRST THING I GOING TO DO IS YELL "SMITHSBURG" AND GIVE YOU A BIG HUG. SLEEP EASY AS WE HAVE TAEKN OVER YOUR WATCH. I live in the community which he patrolled and I'd assisted in his instruction on various subjects throughout the Police academy. Rarely did he pass without a hearty wave and smile, whether we passed in cars or his passing by or his stopping by my home. I doubt I'll drive the streets of this community without the memories of seeing him in his car at one of his favorite spots for traffic enforcement. He was ever diligent and a true community oriented officer. I will sorrowly miss him, both as a resident of Smithsburg, a friend, and a fellow officer.
His ultimate sacrifice will not be forgotten.
