When God Made Peace Officers
Unknown Author
When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one"

And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order?" A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform."

He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses and testify in court the next day."

He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way."

"It's not the hands that are causing me problems." said the Lord, "It's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through the bulge in a pocket before he asks, 'May I see what's in there sir?' (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of the head for his partner's safety. And another pair of eyes here in the front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say. 'You'll be all right ma'am.' When he knows it isn't so."

"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."

"I can't" said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident, and feed a family of five on a civil service pay check."

The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly. "Can it think?" she asked.

"You bet." said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crime scenes; recite Miranda warnings in his sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...and still keeps its sense of humor."

"This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell; coax a confession from a child abuser; comfort a murder victim's family; and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her fingers across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak." She pronounced. "I told you that you are trying to put to much in this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions; for fallen comrades; for commitment to that funny piece of metal called his badge; for justice."
"You're a genius." said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there." he said.
I think this poem says it all. Hopefully these simple words will be enough for the family to endure the dark times that are coming.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Bedard during this most difficult time. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

And to his wife ~ I share your suffering. I also lost my husband in the line of duty and am left to raise 2 young children on my own. This is a tragedy no family should have to bear. My heart aches for you thinking about what you are going through right now, and what you will go through over the coming weeks and months but I want you to know that you will get through this. It is a very long, very difficult journey but you will get through it and please hear me when I say that you are not alone. There are many, many other police widows who understand your situation and emotions and will be there to support you and help you whenever you need it. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you, Officer Bedard, for your service and ultimate sacrifice - you will never be forgotten. May God bless you and may you rest in eternal peace, forever safe in the arms of the angels.

Dear Mrs. Bedard,
I'm deeply sorry for your loss. My wife Amy Lynn Donovan of Austin Texas Police Dept. was killed during a foot pursuit by a patrol car driven by her partner three years ago. Our youngest child was only two. Although I will never tell anyone that I know what they are going through, because everyone needs to handle things in their own way. I'm sure you will vent your anger towards the criminal that made a choice to endanger not only your husband and other members of law enforcement, but the community as well. Your husband stood between danger and the community. And they will be safer because of his actions. It will be hard to focus. Be strong.
To the officer driving the patrol car. It will be hard. You are not the first and you can reach out to those that have been there. Remember you will always Be your brothers keeper.

From the heart,
Teryy Donovan
