God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain; but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.

Rest in peace.

SA Schuldheiss,

I spent time with new AFOSI agents in training at FLETC last week. I noticed your picture on the wall -- they created a beautiful memorial for you and your brothers. It pains me to see your picture on this page... I know right where it was taken, and I know why you were standing there that day. We are all proud of you and thankful for your selfless service. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Nate,
For two people who could debate and talk for hours, I just have not had the words to give this time. The passing of your birthday last week inspired me to finally use my words. We had some wonderful times and some tough times, both professionally and personally. You taught me many things I will never forget. Most importantly, you taught me to always live my life with zest and fervor as you did every day of your life. The messages left here speak volumes about the impact of your all-too-short life. I have done what I came over here to do...serve my country and AFOSI with honor. The sacrifice you made was not in vain...the world is a safer place because of your efforts along side Tom and Dave. Nevertheless, you are missed. As our band of brothers and sisters pledged to do, I continue to pledge to ensure those you loved, who are left behind, are supported and cared for. Go in peace...we will see each other again on the other side. With Makoto.

My dearest Nathan, no words to express my sadness for your departure. I do know that you are beside GOD at this moment and time and you have been looking upon us since you left this world to be in a better one! I do sometimes wonder if this is all real or not, but life shows me that is and that you have left your legacy - LOVE all and everyone! You were a great man and unforgetable person! I trully miss you and I pray to see you at the other side! Te amo meu querido! Obrigada por tudo e todos os momentos ricos e inesqueciveis. Sempre, Priscilla Braga

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Agent Schuldheiss. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Nathan, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Nathan's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Nathan's life was about so much more than the way he died. Nathan will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Agent Schuldheiss, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Nate,

It's taken awhile for me to bring myself to leave a message here. What began as a mentor/mentee relationship quickly turned into a friendship where I learned just as much from you as you did from me regarding work and life in general. I learned new forms of determination, work ethic and class from you as well as a sense of not accepting the status quo. When you raised your hand to go, I didn't want you to however I knew it was what you wanted to do and I will forever admire that. I'll forever remember the snifters of brandy and whiskey while talking about life, the cigars, the training classes and the cases we worked together. I won't say goodbye but see ya later buddy.

To Nate's family, my sincere condolences, he was one of the best agents I had the honor to work with and an even better friend.
