"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I will never forget the first time that I saw those bright blue eyes. I just fell in love. You were getting off the plane from a deployment. You looked so strong and walked with such confidence. You were such a strong person and never let anything or anyone get in the way of your dreams. There was absloutly nothing you couldn't do(except plumbing). Many people say that you have made such an impact on their lives, and it's so true. You made me who I am today. It was you that made me believe that I could do anything I wanted to. You gave me the strength and confidence that I had lacked most of my life. I owe you the world.

Babe, I just want you to know that I am so honored and proud to have known you, but even more to be your wife. The day we got married was the happiest day of my life. I am so proud of the work you did as a Trooper. You did such a great job, and took it so seriously.

I want to thank you for blessing me with such a wonderful family. They are so wonderful and I love them very much.

Don't worry I will finish school just the way I was supposed to anyway, and I will be an RN. I just want to make you as proud of me as I am of you. I have no clue how to live without you, but I know that you will give me stregth. You are missed and loved more than you will ever know. I love you babe. Be careful and I will see you when you get home.

They walk a beat of concrete and stone,
They drive through the city in a car, alone.
They swallow their pride, their prejudice, their grief,
They deal with all kinds, from preacher to thief.

Sometimes they get weary, from fighting this fight,
To punish the wrong and defend the right.
Defending a sacred creed and code,
Of freedom and justice, they bear the full load.

You don't ever see them for what's deep inside,
The pain, the anger, or many tears they've cried.
For you, for me, and others in fear,
Seldom a "Thank You", do they ever hear.

If you could look at their heart, just once,
You would see,
Their own life is the gift given to you and me.

Some of my friends sent me a card today. In it was a saying I had never heard before. It read; "When God walks thru his flower garden, he only picks the strongest and best." That's what you were to this family. You made my granddaughter very happy and we will never forget you. Walk with the angels Brian, they are so lucky to have you guarding the gates of heaven.
