Reflections for Trooper Brian Carl McMillen

Brian - I just wanted to take a few minutes and wish you a Happy Birthday. Today, on what would have been your 30th Birthday, I wish you quiet sleep, dreams of meadows, deep in flowers and grass, of oceans calm and flecked with silver, of islands hushed by gentle waves...Today, I wish you love.

Happy Birthday Lil' Cuz! I was looking through some pictures the other day and came across some of you. Miss that smiling face of yours! You looked so happy in your flight gear ready to take off for the thrill of your life.
Your smile was always contagious! No matter what mood one might be in, you would always be the one jokester cutting up that would make sure you were having fun.
We miss you more than words can say! Happy Birthday Brian!

October 28, 2007 is a day that will forever be etched in the hearts and lives of those who loved and lost you. The last three years seem to have gone by so quickly, yet on that day, time seemed to stand still for all of us. I just wanted you to know how much we miss you. I think of you often, especially this time of year. As I sit and watch the leaves, so vibrant, as the wind lifts them from trees and settles them peacefully to the ground, I can't help but think of you. You were so vibrant and full of life and that is how I will always remember you. Fall is one of God's most beautiful masterpieces and has always been my favorite season of all. And even though I'll never understand why you were taken from us so soon, I know that God only takes the best and most beautiful. I think you often, but will always remember you in the fall, and smile through the tears. Good Speed Mac!!! Love, Aunt Kelly, Uncle Steve and Dalton

Brian,
I couldn't make it to the cemetary last time I was home so a friend left a box of hamburger helper by your grave for me. I'll never forget your face when you realized you were supposed to brown the hamburger before making the rest of it....but you were nice enough to think about making dinner!! I think of you often and you will always have a special place in my heart. I can't believe it has been three years...

Hello Brian,

Just thinking a lot about you today. Reading the stories below is simply incredible. How you have inspired so many without even knowing it. Our family is growing and certainly remembering you all the time. I regularly tell Bennett about you even though he never got the chance to meet you. He was born one year to the day that you were buried. I can't help but think about what that could mean. So many things are beyond our control, but we can certainly take what we are given as a sign that someone is looking out for us. Please continue to look after our family and keep us safe. We miss you.

Last week Justin Taylor was shipped off to prison. A couple months before that ShaiTan Cook left for prison. Watching Taylor walk out in cuffs & shackles last Wed. was finally some closure to this tragic accident. The last couple years I have worn a Heroes Live Forever Sweatshirt. Everytime I put it on I think of you. I also wear a Heroes live Forever bracelet in your memory. I believe you truly are a hero and would have done wonderful things if your life had'nt been cut short. God Bless You Brian.

I'll never forget anything about your passing my friend. I remember I was at lunch on mids when I got the news that we lost a trooper. I prayed for the trooper for his family and prayed it wasn't you. I remember driving home that morning and seeing all the lights at the scene of the accident. Again I repeated my prayer. I went home and took a nap. When I awoke I saw your picture on the news and punched a hole in the door as I feel on my bed. I still can't believe it. from our time spent together in the Air Guard I always knew you to be one of the best always dedicated to the task at hand. I guess God must have needed someone dependable for a special project. Rest In Peace my friend I will see you again soon enough.

Two years ago today, we got the shocking news of your tragic accident. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. There was no way possible it could have been you. You were on top of your game. You were out making a difference. You were one that represented a true role model for others to strive to be like. There isn't a day goes by that you aren't missed. Even though you are not physically here, you are still making a difference in so many lives and we thank you for that.
One day we'll meet up again and you'll probably still be laughing of the time you pulled me over on my way running late to work. Wish I would have known that was going to be the last time I saw you. I would have been much later to work!
Miss you lil' Cuz!

If we could “Manufacture” Troopers, Trooper Brian McMillen would be the pattern. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about his positive influence on so many people within our Department. Brian had tremendous leadership qualities. When he was elected Class President, I went into my office and had to ask the other staff members, Who is Cadet McMillen? Brian wasn’t the type of person who gave “Rah, Rah” speeches in front of Academy staff…he lead by example and he brought the class together from behind the scenes. His classmates recognized he was special way before the staff noticed him.

This past Friday, Cadet Class 117 elected class officers. Prior to voting, I spoke to the class about the responsibilities of each position and warned them of the shoes they were attempting to fill. As class president, no assignment was too great for Trooper McMillen to tackle. Brian did not pretend to know everything. He knew it was important to get the entire class involved in projects. This gave each cadet a sense of pride because each of them was contributing.

After Brian graduated from the Academy, I was fortunate to back him up on a traffic stop. He was always looking to go beyond the traffic stop…looking for the “mother-load”.

Brian, my prayers will always be with you and your family. Rest Brother, you will never be forgotten.

Brian, I only met you once. You brought a prisoner into the Sangamon County Jail. You were truly one of the finest troopers to come into the facility. The morning I heard you had been killed while on duty is a day I will never forget. I think of you often, and pray for your family everyday. You were truly a hero and should never be forgotten. In May of this year I went to Washington DC for police memorial week with the Sangamon County Honor Guard. There was one name on the wall that I made a photo copy of. It was Brian C. McMillen. You are a hero and Heroes Live Forever! To your family: Thank you for giving Brian to us for the short time that we had him in the law enforcement family. Brian was truly unique, special, one of a kind. I feel blessed to have met Trooper McMillen. I only wish he would have been with us longer. I think he would have done some extrodinary things! Thank you Brian for answering the call for assistance that fateful night. I only wish is that it wouldnt have ended the way it did.

Though I did not know Brian personally I attended last years police memorial where he was honored and his E.O.W was one of the main points. My prayers and thoughts go out with your family, and no worry brother the rest of us our still out there and are a little safer with you looking over all of us now. GOD BLESS!

Brian,
I think about you everyday, especially when am getting ready to go to work. I Recently joined Facebook and one of your classmates had a group picture and you were in it. As i saw your picture, i just froze for a min and said 'oh my god, there is Brian'. Now, i know we have never met, but everyone had nothing but great things to say about you. I still can't believe the ISP family has lost such a great Trooper who really believed in Integrity, Service, and Pride. I think about your family often, especially around the holidays. God bless you all.
To Angela: I know you might think its easy for me to say 'stay strong' but, how could you when even I get upset when i think about the loss of one of our own. Only time will make the healing process easier. As i read your last post on 04/16/09, I couldnt help but break down and cry because I really feel sorry for you. I do believe every word you posted. You are one of a kind.
Love you all
I will never forget you, Brian Mcmillen
