Never has the title "Law Enforcement Officer" meant so much to me as it does now. Dale's family has so much to look back on and remember. The support, love, and respect that we have received and seen at this time was truly amazing. From the medical field, EMS personal, the Sheriff's Dept, Police Dept, the town of Jefferson, TX, the community that we live in, and the fellow officers that surrounded him as he was laid to rest. It made our hearts glad and lightened our grief.
To all the wonderful Peace Officers out there, no matter what aspect you have taken to serve, I want to say Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Please take care as you protect those you love.
Thank You All!

I knew Dale when we worked together at Brandom's Mfg in Keene. I remember when he started out in law enforcement at the Keene Police Department as a reserve officer. I lost track of Dale and was not aware that he was working for Marion County. I am sorry that I was not able to keep in contact with him. Dale was a great guy and he was always ready to help someone. I will keep his family and friends in my prayers.

To the family, friends, and officers that knew Investigator Sherrill, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the trying times ahead of you. Please know your not alone.

Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you and the roses

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Here I am, lost in the ashes of time, but who wants tomorrow?
In between the longing to hold you again
I'm caught in your shadow, I'm losing control
My mind drifts away, we only have today

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way
I will sacrifice 'til the blinding day when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

When the veils are gone as I let you go, as I let you go

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you who is closest

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders
and said, "No Lord. I guess I ain't.
Because those who carry badges,
can't always be a saint."

"I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough...
and sometimes I've been violent
because the streets are awful tough."

"But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep."

"And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I wept unmanly tears."

"I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear."

"If you've a place for me here, Lord,
it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But, if you don't...I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne,
where saints had often trod,
as the policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on heaven's streets.
You've done your time in hell."

My heart goes out to the family and friends of this brave man. His sacrifice will not be forgotten. You are all in my prayers...

As I gaze at Dale's picture I remember the 9 year old boy that I met so many years ago. He was a good kid that grew to be a great man. I was there today as we all said goodbye....it was a hard day! I wrote the River a long time ago, now it's for Dale.
Dale, I know we'll see you again but for now... rest my friend.

The River

One day Gabriel saw Jesus standing on the bank of a river in Heaven.
Jesus had a sad look on His face as he watched the water flowing by.
Gabriel asked Jesus about the history of the river
and why He had such a look on His face?

Jesus told Gabriel that the river ran from the foot of God's throne
and that the water was the tears God shed each time a Police Officer was laid to rest.
Jesus said, "Each year the river grows larger and flows more rapid."

As Gabriel and Jesus stood gazing across the waters Gabriel asked,
"When can we bring them home?"
Jesus replied, "The great waking up morning will soon come."
Gabriel then asked, "What will happen to the river?"
Jesus answered, "God will bring them to the banks of the river
and let them see the tears He shed for them
and then the river will run dry, never again to flow."

"Each of His Peacemakers will be called forward one by one to lay their
badges at the foot of the throne and there they will receive their crowns of gold."

Gabriel looked into the eyes of Jesus with a questioning look about his face.
Jesus simply whispered.... Soon Gabriel...Soon.
