"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders
and said, "No Lord. I guess I ain't.
Because those who carry badges,
can't always be a saint."

"I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough...
and sometimes I've been violent
because the streets are awful tough."

"But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep."

"And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I wept unmanly tears."

"I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear."

"If you've a place for me here, Lord,
it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But, if you don't...I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne,
where saints had often trod,
as the policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on heaven's streets.
You've done your time in hell."

You have made to ultimate sacrifice, but it is not in vain.
You have shown your dedication to your fellow man by the career field you chose to follow, although I never knew you, I can only venture to say that you were a blessing to your family, fellow patrol officers, and all that you came in contact with. Rest well knowing you have done the best you could do. My blessings to your family. Thank You for your service.

To Davids wife, children and extended faily of Officers everywhere. I Pray for each and everyone of you.Even in Christ's hour of darkness, Faith,Hope and Love remained with him. I pray that it remains with You. Davids life and death has touched more people than you may realize, from the elderly couple who may have needed directions from this gentle person, to Emergency room staff, 911 Dispatchers and MHP office staff. These people may not wear the Uniform but are grieving the loss of a good person, Husband and Father. Thank you "New Dave" as I knew You, your integrity and love will be passed on through your Wife and Children.

Lt. Mike Reddick and I have the privilege of conducting the selection process for the Montana Highway Patrol. And I can honestly state that David was an outstanding applicant. He was always polite, courteous, professional, and had his paperwork in perfect order…..and always shared his smile with all of us. His demeanor remained the same once he took his oath of office and received his badge. I will always remember his beautiful family on graduation day, August 10, 2006, and how proud they were of their husband and Dad. It was an honor to read his biography during the badge pinning and to know he is so very well loved and respected by all he knew. I always appreciated his visits when he was in HQ and his kind manner.

Trooper Graham, you will always be remembered. Thank you for your service to the Patrol and the citizens of Montana.

To his family, may God hold you and uplift you as you remember David.

Blessed be the memory of Trooper David A. Graham.
