"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I can never understand this type of violence against our police officers. It is so unnecessary. It makes the hurt even that much more painful to take. My heartfelt sympathies to Daniel's fiancee, friends, family, and co-workers. My thoughts and prayers are with you today and always.

Officer Talbot
Thank you for your service, rest in peace my brother. Watch over the rest of us from your heavenly perch.

To the Family of Officer Talbot
Your complete family are in my families prayers and God bless you. This is a dark time, but there is light at end of this tunnel and your heart will heal. My family is just starting to make it thru it with the death of my future son in-law Josh Norris (EOW Jul 5th 2007). I know you can not see pass the grief right now or believe you could have shed some may tears. What has helped my family and may help yours, remember your love ones laugh, his smile and all those things that are unique to him, since they are truly what made him. Daniel will always be with you, that gentle wind that dries your tears, that warm feel of an embrace when no one is near is his way of helping you heal. To Officer Talbot Fiancée, my heart is with you, since having seen the pain my daughter has and is still going through, since her and Josh had gotten engaged on July 4th. As I told her, there is no doubt of his love for you since he asked you out of some may others he could have shared his life, but you are still with us and god will send love your way again. Do not dwell on what could have been, but remember the time that you had with him, you will never forget him and that is ok, he was your love. But as you heal and remember him, smile that smile that he loved, laugh since I am sure he loved to hear you laughter and live since he would want you to live.

To Revere Police Department
My brothers this lost will always be felt at roll call, on the road or just talking at a break. For those that were on the scene, understand that nothing you did or things you felt you should have done would have changed this out come, God had called Daniel. Like all of us that wear a badge, he knew the risk and like yourself served regardless, mourn your brother, but also dedicate your service in his name by being the best you possible can. Your Department is in my prayers

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office
