Reflections for Chief Deputy Tommy Kent Martin

I am so very sorry your journey's end happened much too soon and violently. You are well remembered, highly respected and loved and those feelings can never end.

Tommy Martin was one of the good guys. I remember him fondly, teaching at the ISP Academy for new CSI's(Technicians back then) in 1993 when I was doing an internship with ISP. He had a great sense of humor and a gentle approach. My father, Richard Cass, worked with him for most of their careers and had the highest respect for him.

You served your City, State, and Country with courage. You were taken too soon at the hands pf a coward, but may the Lord bless and watch over your family always. Rest in peace my brave brother.

I remember when T. K. was shot. Jared Southworth (K. I. A. 2/8/09) was eager to take the squad car to Arcola. I told him just stay out of their way. I further remember seeing Charlie at the fireworks in Arthur and asking him about Tommy's condition. Charlie got choked up. Then I got choked up.

This is my shield.
I bear it before me into battle,
but it is not mine alone.
It protects my brother on my left.
It protects my city.
I will never let my brother out of it's shadow
nor my city out of it's shelter.
I will die with my shield before me facing the enemy.

Rest In Peace.

My partner , my friend. Our stories are endless, a few weeks ago Marcia told me I needed anew suit, I disagreed and pointed out the fact I have a good suit in the closet. Well, I tried on the suit, reached in the pocket and found the notes I used when I spoke at your funeral. Got a new suit.
Well, I have a few new problems and perhaps I will visit with you before to long.

Tommy I think of you often. Hard to believe it has been almost 7 years since we lost you. Little things happen that make me smile when I remember some to the stuff we got into. Unfortunately this week you are joined by two Alaska State Troopers gunned downed in the line duty. But it make me think of Alaska and the time you went to the conference in Springfield and got the wrong coffee cup in a shipping mistake. But the trained investigator you were it was not long before we all had cups, bumper stickers and beer holders from Skinny Dick's Halfway Inn Fairbanks, Alaska. Just one the all memories in over 27 years as friends and co-workers. As time goes on more of the old gangs is with you now, Gary Davis, Ronnie Earl and Jan Ray just to name a few. Now Donnie Young is with you. Rest in Peace, Brother

TK, 5 years ago you left us. Your passing has a left a void among your family and friends that will never be filled.

Numerous officers and crime scene personnel benefited from your knowledge, experience and sense of humor.

I will never forget the simple wisdom of the comment you made during your presentation at the IDIAI conference.

Rest in peace sir.

Dear Tommy,

Its almost been another year..will be 3 years now. Sometimes it seems like last week. I think about you often and that awful day. I will never forget the words you said on the radio that day but I try to remember the good times we all had. You were the BEST Tommy!! Tommy,

A year has gone by, but not a day goes by when you don't cross my mind. I know that you are looking down on all of us and know that you are always with us. I miss you more than ever. It is hard not having you here to go to when there is a problem or we just need someone to talk to. All the new officers here will never know what it was like to work with you. That is something that the rest of will have to tell them about. But, I wish that you could know that I would give anything to have you here again.
Love always and forever,
Courtney

On the 1st anniversary of Chief Deputy Martin's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. TK my friend. It has been almost a year now since we have lost you. I miss you. I am at CJI in Little Rock, AR now getting ready to teach the last session of the CSTP. You were here with me as a co-instructor for the past 9 sessions, it is strange to be here without you.
We have worked together for the ISP for over 20 years, we have been friends for over 30 years. You were here teaching with me two weeks before you were shot, and then you were gone. But you will never be forgotten!

Besides being a friend, colleague, mentor and con-instructor with me you were also on the Board of Directors for ICSIA. We all will miss you. Thank you for your dedication to duty and to your family and friends. I know you are in a better place.
