I have copies of the newspaper articles from the Falls City Journal and Falls City News about the murder of Town Marshal Wake. If you are interested, contact me at [email protected] and I will send them to you as email attachments. If anyone knows the geographic location of Kanaly's Saloon in Rulo, and his wife's name, I would appreciate that information. Thanks. JPG

I was told years ago of an ancestor who was a Nebraska lawman, who had been gunned down.

After much research, I finally found you...

My mother's name is Sharon Lou Wake, daughter of Albert Irvin "Bud" Wake (April 30, 1913 ~ April 5th, 1978) & Twanda Faye Worlein (October 7th, 1924 ~ March 29th, 2010).

Thank you to Rulo, Ne Cemetery Member Craig for Honoring My 6 th Generation grandfather Marshal Alfonso's Wake with a new tombstone. It's a very good thing I have his Harmonica he has played back when he was a cop. It was handed down to me from his son William H Wake and wife Mary Lavina Narence, then handed down to his Granddaughter Edith May Wake one of 4 granddaughters which was handed down to me in 1980 kept in a safe for 40 years until now. I am honored that my Great Grandmother Edith gave it to me 118 years after his death.

The suspect's name was Wm "Bill" Hunt he was in John Kanaly's Saloon getting drunk with several others while a Democratic Party Political Rally was going on outside. Those in the Saloon were disturbing the rally. The saloon owner sent for the Marshall who came and asked the men to settle down and give those outside their day. Bill Hunt refused and Marshall Wake arrested him. While walking the suspect to the jail, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot twice, once in the mouth and the second in his left breast. Marshall Wake fell immediately and died. There was no one around and the area was dark at around 9:30pm, thinking he was not seen he went to a nearby ravine and threw his gun in it. Returning to the town the body just found and a crowd was surrounding the body. He began to ask what had happened, playing off his part in the killing. A fellow recognized him and as the guy that the Marshall was arresting and last seen with. He was arrested and hurriedly taken to Falls City jail. A group was trying to form a lynch mob to go after the suspect, but for lack of a clear leader, they did not. A trial commenced and Judge Stuhl sentenced Wm Hunt to life imprisonment.

This information was found in newspaper articles on the website ChroniclingAmerica.com there were several articles from papers throughout the United States.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 109th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Your sacrifice was made so many years ago. Evil was, is, and will be a part of life just as goodness such as yours will also be present.

Rest In Peace
