Officer Alan Silver was one of the nicest people you ever wanted to meet and was a very humble young man. He would always come up to the office and talk and joke with us. He was one of the best at what he did and it hurts to lose him this way. But, I rejoice because he is secure in Christ and I know he's in the most beautiful place. My prayers go out to the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Silver. You sir will be missed!!!

Officer Silver,
My heart breaks for your family & friends for I know the pain they are going through. My first husband was killed in the line of duty 5 1/2 years ago and my heart still hurts everyday. I was just passing through Rocky Mount on Sunday after visiting my parents...little did I know that I would get an e-mail this week that one of it's officers died while protecting it's citizens. Your family will be in my prayers and I pray that you have met Calvin on the golden streets of heaven by now. Rest in peace sir!

God Bless you. By reading the reflections left by your friends and fellow officers, you sounded like a great guy and a dedicated officer. It still hurts even though I didn't know you personally. We have a dangerous job, but it is our calling! I know you died doing your job and what an honor is must be going to heaven knowing that. God Bless your family and fellow officers during this difficult time.

To a friend and Little Brother that I admired because of his dedication and will to be a law enforcement officer. Alan came to the Greenville North Carolina's Highway Patrol station in 2005 to get information and to apply for a Troopers position. I gave him an application packet and he completed and turned in his information and started the process while he was enrolled in college. He called emailed and came to my office at least once or twice a week during that time. As time passed he decided that he would go back to Rocky Mount and join the Police force to get some experience and transit over to the Highway Patrol. He called me and told me that he completed the training and was a certified Police officer. He emailed me at least once or twice a week to tell me how he was doing and that he really loved his job as an officer. He would always send me officer safety tips that he would find on the internet and also officer bulletins from work of which some I would already have. He was so exited about sharing information with me that he would forget to add the attachement. It was amazing of this young officer with less than a year of experience at the time sharing information with an officer with 27 years of experience which in most cases should be the other way around. Alan was very enthused about his job. I told him with the ambition he had he should have been a Trooper from the start. I thought I had really gained a friend but in reality I gained a new Little Brother because Alan was always looking up to me for advice and encouragement. I shared a lot of old war stories and also told him that this is a new era in life and that law enforcement is a lot different today as from years past. I also shared with him about giving the public respect and he will get the same in return which is the key to being a good Police Officer. When I looked at comments made by Alan's commrades he was showing himself to be a model officer, one with dignity and respect. I will miss my Friend and Little Brother. I could not be by his side when he was injured but when I heard the news all I could do was pray and ask God to take care of him for me and I will always pray for his family because this is a great loss for us all. There will never be another Alan Christopher Silver like the one we have just lost here on earth but there will be an Alan Christopher Silver on God's Police Force in Heaven. I will miss you my brother. Trooper R.E. Backus

It is always sad to see a fellow office give his life in the line of duty. Although I did not have the honor to know Officer Silver, I can only respect his memory and wish that the sacrafice he made can be used constructively to prevent a this from ever happening again.

I worked for this department for approximately 7 years before going to work for the state. I never knew Officer Silver personally, however, he is a brother in the law enforcement family. He made the ultimate sacrife to protect and serve his community. My thoughts and prayer go out to his family, friends, and co-workers through this difficult time. May he rest in piece.

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.

When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.

When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.
