Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Trooper David Brinkerhoff

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"THE FINAL INSPECTION"

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell

Thank's Brother, May you rest at the right hand of God and forever watch over the rest of your family. May god bless your family and friends, and help to guide them through these rough times that are ahead. Rest my brother, Rest.

A Part of America Died

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battlefield too,
just as if he’d gone off to war.
And the flag of our nation will fly at half mast;
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today;
in happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks that beat he once walked,
and stands at each rookie’s side.
He answered the call, he gave us his all;
a part of America died.

To the family, friends, and officers that knew trooper Brinkerhoff, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the trying times ahead of you. Please know your not alone.

Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you and the roses

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Here I am, lost in the ashes of time, but who wants tomorrow?
In between the longing to hold you again
I'm caught in your shadow, I'm losing control
My mind drifts away, we only have today

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way
I will sacrifice 'til the blinding day when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

When the veils are gone as I let you go, as I let you go

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you who is closest

I went to college with Dave and worked with him, and it's amazing to see all these brother law enforcement officers and regular citizens leaving kind words and thoughts here on this site - most of whom didn't even know Dave, but are saddened anyhow. Thank you for that. He'll be remembered forever...
