Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Thomas Devlin

Rest in peace.

Deputy Chief E.J. Morris
Roeland Park Kansas P.D.

April 22, 2007

You gave your life doing your duty. You have served with honour and pride for so long since the incident that took you life. You have in effect lived a death sentance but in doing so never faltered from your duty and continued your public service.

A POLICEMAN'S PRAYER

BROTHER WHEN YOU WEEP FOR ME REMEMBER THAT IT WAS MEANT TO BE.
LAY ME DOWN AND WHEN YOU LEAVE REMEMBER I'LL BE AT YOUR SIDE...IN EVERY DARK AND DREARY ALLEY I'LL BE THERE AS YOU SLOWLY TREAD, ON EVERY STREET CORNER IN THE DRIVING SNOW I'LL HOLD YOUR COAT AND YOU WILL KNOW.
IN PLACES WHERE THE DEVIL IS AFRAID TO WALK...
AT DOORS WHERE YOU MEET RESISTANCE...
IN HOUSES WHERE CHILDREN HIDE...
YOU KNOW I'LL BE AT YOUR SIDE.
THE PLACE FROM WHICH I NOW RESPOND IS OVERSTAFFED WITH HEROES GONE...MEN WHO ANSWERED ONE LAST JOB AND DID IT WELL.
AS POLICEMEN WE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A CARD DEALT IN OUR HAND...A CARD WE HOPE WE NEVER PLAY BUT WE HOLD IT THERE ANYWAY.
THE CARD IS SOMETHING WE IGNORE AS WE STAND ON THAT THIN BLUE LINE EVERY TOUR...FOR WE KNOW THAT WE ARE THE ONLY PRAYER FOR MANY OUT THERE.
SO REMEMBER, AS YOU WIPE YOUR TEARS, THE JOY I HAVE KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE YEARS...AS THE JOB I LOVED TO DO I PRAY THAT THIS THOUGHT WILL SEE YOU THROUGH.

Rest in Peace friend.

Officer Devlin, I never met you but I certainly heard your name on the radio often enough as I "eavesdropped" from time to time. From what I was told by your colleagues, you were quite a guy and a terrific cop. It's apparent that you put others before yourself. You truly are a hero and Boston College and your brothers and sisters in blue across the Commonwealth will miss you, especially your fellow campus cops.

My heart goes out to all your family and comrades in arms.

God Bless and may you Rest in Peace.

Final Inspection

The Policeman stood and faced his God,
which ust always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now Policeman."
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turn the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?

The Policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No Lord I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfuly tough.

But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked alot of overtime
when the bills got just to steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had to much,
but if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
where the Saints had often trod.
As the Policeman waited quietly,
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, Policeman,
you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
you've done your time in Hell."

(UKNOWN ARTHUR)

GODSPEED AND REST IN PEACE BROTHER FOR MAKING THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE ONLY DOING WHAT YOU LOVED AND TO SAVE SO MANY PEOPLE. WHO KNOW'S HOW MANY LIVES WERE SAVED BECAUSE OF YOU AND FELLOW BROTHER OFFICERS.

Rest in peace, brother. It takes a brave man to rush into a burning building to save others. It takes an extraordinary man to do so when he knows he already has damage to his lungs. Your valor is an example we can only hope to live up to. Peace be with your family and friends.
