I was Bob's FTO when he came to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department from LAPD. I also supervised Bob both on patrol and during his D.A.R.E. assignment. I never once doubted Bob's devotion, dedication or loyalty. "Blessed are the Peacemakers" RIP Bob, see ya later..Seaside.

Men and women enter law enforcement due to an overwelming moral call to protect and keep the innocent from harm. This noble cause that drives those who serve because of that committment to keep our communities safe are heros in the eyes of those who reap the benefits of their protection. These warriors are also heros in the eyes of their children, spouses and families who now must bear the grief of the loss. Our hearts, prayers and thoughts are with you as you navigate this difficult path and honor the life of a hero that has touched each and everyone of us in a special way.

Bob and I were both former Marines who taught tactics to new recruits, as well as to seasoned veterans for the Los Angeles Police Department. We were both assigned to the Tactics Training Unit, and we were assigned to the Elysian Park Academy. Upon reaching 20 years with the Los Angeles Police Department, Bob decided to retire, and head North. He resumed life as a law enforcement officer with The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.

On 29 April 1992, the largest riot in U. S. history began. Bob and several of his fellow deputies were sent to Los Angeles to assist us.

Bob was one of those cops who had the biggest heart - he loved the community. He was also one of those cops that if things went sideways, I wanted him to be there to be my back - up. Dealing with his passing, has been very difficult for me......

37 YEARS OF POLICE SERVICE. NO MORE NEED BE SAID.

I HAD A FRIEND YEARS AGO WHO WAS A SAN JOSE POLICE OFFICER, WHO WAS RAISED IN RIPON. I VERY FONDLY REMEMBER THE TRIPS TO RIPON TO VISIT HIS PARENTS. HE ALWAYS WENT TO GIVE HIS MOM SOME SOCKS TO DARN. I WENT FOR THE FRIED CHICKEN SHE MADE. VERY FOND MEMORIES OF THAT LITTLE TOWN.

Officer Winget was my traffic training officer when I was with the LAPD. He was the nicest and smartest officers I knew. I know work in the Ripon area and wished I had known he was in the area.

This was written to us when my husband, Dave was killed.
I never forgot it-perhaps it will offer some comfort-

We may never understand it
the risks these brave ones take
but occasionally we see a bit
of the difference their lives make
Some do it for the action
others find it a callin'
All find the satisfaction
and few become the fallen
Being an officer is what he loved
to him as good as it gets
Law was what he dreamed of
He would have no regrets
And though it saddens all of us
to lose him in this way
He knew how an officer must
live life to the fullest everyday

Our hearts are with you-

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Winget and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Officer Winget has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Officer Winget, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer Winget is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
