Reflections for Special Agent Barry Lee Bush

Barry ... I recall the days we worked together fondly. as a new agent I had so much to learn and you were my resource, you were my model, you were my inspiration. God bless you and God bless your family.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the second anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

Unfortunately, no matter how well trained or competent the officers are, every day on the job is a day of peril. Within the last three weeks 4 brave officers from Oakland, CA and 3 brave officers from Pittsburgh, PA have been murdered by thugs wielding AK-47s.

How brave are each of our true American heroes who face danger each day he or she pins on thier badges to police our streets so that our communities may be safeguarded.

Barry,

Although I never had the honor of knowing you personally, our class counselors in NAC 07-05 did. You were one of two Special Agents our class chose to honor who were killed in the line of duty. From the stories I heard, you were definitely the one person everyone wanted to go through a door with them and also one of the most thoughtful and caring guys. You will be sorely missed!!! My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends. You will not be forgotten.... Rest in peace, Barry!!!!

Special Agent Barry Lee Bush,

The circumstances of your death are as horrendous as any situation can get. Yet, who among us who has actively participated in any dangerous police operation has not thought of how he or she might act when things suddenly go wrong. It is the dread of everyone sworn to uphold the law. So it is not with any thoughts of blame or condemnation here that fill the mind. This is not the first incident of such circumstance and regretfully it probably will not be the last. What has ocurred then, regardless of much preventative training, could occur yet again. To any one of us. And at any time. We can only hope that things go right. None of us, not any, can guarantee they will. Such is our lot.

That Special Agaent Barry Lee Bush lost his life in this way is, none-the-less, the death of a hero. A lawman who acted courageously as a soldier of the law. And who, I am certain, were he to have his say, accepts the circumstances of his death. Strength, Honor, Courage, Dedication and Sacrifice speak for him now. They say clearly that he layed down his life for others. He obeyed our Creator's commandment in the course of his duty. And without hesitation. It is all the justification needed to journey toward the after-life. Special Agent Barry Lee Bush now joins all the law officers before him who have walked that path, and it is my sincerest belief that it leads to no place other than Heaven.

I was honored to sit at the service in Ocean Grove for you and the other two police officers from NJ that were taken last year. Today's ceremony was moving and although words can't explain how much of a hero you are, these come close:

"Did you ever know that you're my hero
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings"

Thank You for everything

The last time I saw Barry alive we were waiting for someone together. We decided to get a coffee while waiting. I offered to pay and he would not let me, no matter how much I protested, he was senior in every way.... and he bought both coffees.

You were a credit to your profession and were deeply
respected by those who knew you. The pain of your
families must be tremendous even one year later. My
sympathies are also extended to the one who fired his
weapon. Life is surely full of challenges and hardships
and this one is huge. Thank you for your exemplary
service. You were a bright star who will never be extinguished.

SA Bush, you were on the street that day so that members of the community and Country wouldn't have to deal with the guys who were ultimately arrested attempting to rob that bank. Thank you for your service...our thoughts and prayers will always be with your family.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Agent Bush, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Barry, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Barry's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Barry's life was about so much more than the way he died. Barry will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Agent Bush, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been four years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Diane and I frequently walk our dog Dash each evening and pass Karen and Barry's home at the end of the walk. The lamppost on their corner of their property always seems to flicker's as we pass. We feel Barry's saying hello to us and we acknowledge by saying "Hey Barry".

It's been almost 5 months since and not a day passes that I'm not reminded of this tragety.

For every plant or tree I place in the Earth Barry, I'm reminded of you and your friendship and do so in your honor.

The Meyer Family misses you Barry, We always will.
