Reflections for Lieutenant Corey Dahlem

My thoughts and prayers are with Lt. Dahlem's family and the GPD. All of Gainesville mourns this senseless loss and if it weren't for brave officers like Lt. Dahlem our communities would not be safe and orderly. I celebrate the Gator victory but it will always be with a sense of sadness.

Hey there LT, I have found memories working with you on midnight shift when you were promoted to LT and came to Charlie zone commander. I am extremely sad to hear that you left us this way. This shouldn't have happend, you were supposed to retire and enjoy life. I want to say thank you for you dedication and knowledge that helped us all. You ran a tight ship and definitely knew how to do the job. My prayers and thoughts extend to the family, friends, and co-workers who have had to suffer this great lost. LT Dahlem I salute you and please watch over us all while we patrol the streets. I pray that justice will pervail, although it will never bring him back. RIP LT, we got your back covered now.

My condolences to Officer Dahlem, his family, and colleagues. What a sad irony that this happened on what was a night of celebration. I hope that from this tragedy, at least this much good will come of it: maybe people will think about the consequences before they go behind the wheel.

I'm so sorry to hear of your passing. Your wife and children are in my thoughts and prayers. May you rest in peace forever.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

Corey,
I seemed to know you so well through conversations with your sister Heather and her husband Jim. Music was a theme that seemed to surround you, and the lyrics of a popular song comes to mind, "This world was not meant for one as beautiful as you." I know you are in heaven, but thank you for all you have done for the ones whose lives you touched while here.

Dahlem Family and Friends,

I come to this site everyday to read the reflections left for my husband and those of our fellow brothers. Sometimes it's harder to read them because I know that another wife is left to spend her days and nights alone with no one to comfort her when she wakes up crying in the middle of the night, longing to be in his arms. Another father left without a son to continue his legacy and traditions. Another mother is grieving for her child. A child she gave life too and kissed his hurts away. Another child is left without a father to share all the joys and accomplishments with or a pat on the back for a good job well done. Another friend they can no longer joke around with about a call, play a practical joke on or hang out with on their days off. A community left without a hero to pick them up when they often stumble and fall. It’s truly amazing how one simple human life has the ability to affect so many. Lt. was someone who put others before himself and risked everything to protect our communities. It takes someone very special to put on that uniform and face the "ugliness" of this world. I'm sure that if he was anything like my husband, he did it with a smile and if given another chance, he would do it again.

I've come to appreciate three simple words that can sum up what a person's life should be about. Live, Laugh and Love.... LIVE each and everyday as if there is no tomorrow and surround yourself with all the gifts that life can bring. LAUGH at everything including yourself, for humor can be found in every situation good or bad, and LOVE with everything you have, you may never get another chance.

Below is from a card my husband left on my pillow. I wanted to leave it for you. Even though at times, Corey will seem so far away, he really isn't. He is with you every second of every day. All you have to do is look inside your heart and he's there, sharing everything with you. Take care and may the Lord keep a gentle hand on your shoulder.

It's so hard
for me to be apart from you,
even when
it's only for a short while.
I'll see something
I wish I could share with you,
experience something new
and wish you could be a part of it.
But I hope you know that
even when we're not together,
I'm always thinking of you.
During the day,
you're with me in thought,
so that whenever I see
something I think you'd enjoy,
in a special way
you're sharing it with me.
And at night,
I'll fall asleep dreaming
of how wonderful it will feel
to be back in your arms
where I belong.
Every day that we're apart,
I'm looking forward to when
we'll be together again
so I can show you
how much I missed you...
How much I love you.
